Avian Influenza in BC

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has declared that a commercial poultry farm in the Regional District of North Okanagan has been infected with notifiable avian influenza.

Biosecurity

Please continue to practice vigilance in implementing strong biosecuriy on your farms to protect not only your flock, but your neighbouring flocks as well:

Minimize direct contact between poultry farms and prevent contact with wild birds.
Keep your Controlled Access Zone barrier locked at all times.
Closely monitor flock health, including mortalities, feed and water consumption, and abnormal bird behaviour
Immediately consult your veterinarian in cases of unexplained mortality or flock illness; submit unexplained mortalities for testing
Follow additional enhanced "red" biosecurity measures,
Implement a vehicle wash station at the entrance of the control access zone to:
Remove organic debris from vehicles with pressurized water.
Disinfect tires, wheel wells, under-carriage , floor mats, pedals and steering wheels.

If AI is suspected on your farm, implement a self-quarantine, call your veterinarian and inform the BCCMB office.

Disease Response Plans

Chicken Farmers of Canada's On Farm Food Safety Program, requires all farms have an emergency response/farm quarantine plan that is to be initiated whenever a contagious disease is suspected, or confirmed. Please refer to section 8.5 of the Raised by a Canadian Farmer On Farm Food Safety Program Manual for disease response protocols.

Update: on Available Barn Space for Mainstream Growers

The 20% mainstream quota increase was announced on June 18, 2018 with the increase to be issued in quota period A-164. Mainstream growers had until July 5, 2021 to provide adequate space for the 20% increase. Growers provided the registered space to hold the increased by:

• Building new barns, adding on to existing barns, OR

• By applying for high density.

Previously, a quota increase required growers to provide space for all of their quota holdings at the regular density of 2.88 kg/square foot.

The current situation:

• Total Mainstream growers = 223

• Mainstream growers registered for high density = 140

• Growers that do not have space for their entire quota holdings at regular density of 2.88 = 97

• A-177 (Summer) Mainstream Allocation was set at 40,912,607 kg

o Total Barn space at approved density = 47,803,326 kg

 Extra barn space = 6.89M kg

o Total Barn space at 2.88 density = 43,701,379 kg

 Extra barn space = 2.79M kg

While extra barn space has tightened, there is ample barn space within the industry for the current mainstream allocation.
