Pace University SBDC Newsletter - April 2019
Pace University SBDC Director, Andrew Flamm, joined colleagues from the NYSBDC network in Washington D.C., where they met with NYS Congressional representatives and/or their staff members to discuss the future of small business and the range of resources SBDCs provide for entrepreneurs seeking to grow or launch their small businesses. The trip’s highlights included meetings with a number of members of Congress, including Congressman Adriano Espaillat and Congressman Max Rose, as well as staff from the House Small Business Committee, chaired by Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez. The group also attended the fifth annual America’s SBDC Client Showcase and Reception hosted by ASBDC President and CEO Charles “Tee” Rowe.

The Pace University SBDC is excited to announce that our center will be recognized with the 2019 Small Business Development Center for Excellence and Innovation Award during National Small Business Week. Here in New York, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)’s New York District Office will recognize and celebrate the impact that outstanding small businesses have on their communities at an award ceremony in the Microsoft Technology Center in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday morning, May 7. The Pace University SBDC co-hosted a  Meet the Small Business Lenders Panel And Networking Session   with the SBA’s New York District office . The event provided small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with practical strategies for financing their business ventures, and an opportunity to meet one-on-one with 14 participating small business lenders. Neil Braun, Dean of Pace University’s Lubin School of Business , provided introductory remarks that highlighted the focus on entrepreneurship in Pace’s programming, and referenced how SBA financing helped launch a film industry business earlier in his career at which he had a leadership role. SBA’s New York District Director Beth Goldberg also moderated a panel comprised of small business bankers and a panel of representatives from community-based lenders.
Victoria Reina worked as a beautician in her native Paraguay, and sought to open her own beauty salon when she moved to New York. She needed financing to help launch the business as well as marketing guidance, and the Pace SBDC helped Ms. Reina to develop start-up cost estimates and financial projections, and launch the business’ website. With this guidance the client secured a $36,000 loan from LES People’s Federal Credit Union, enabling her to open Lady Bella Beauty Salon in Sunnyside, Queens, and create five new jobs.
