DSN for Global Trade/CITD Participate in Educational and Resource Expo for High School Students

San Diego City College
hosted its Annual Central San Diego Educational and Resource Expo on October 3rd as a lead-up activity for Manufacturing Day, which is celebrated nationally during the first week of October. Typical activities around the Manufacturing Day celebration include tours of manufacturing plants, presentations to students, and competitions, among other activities.

The Educational and Resource Expo featured exhibits and panel discussions with representatives from local manufacturers and resource partners. The purpose of the event was to provide high school and community college students with information on the career opportunities in the manufacturing sector, as well as the educational programs available to help prepare them for these careers.


Local Educators Gain Insight On Career Opportunities For Their Students at Professional Development Event


Palomar College , in collaboration with the  Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade  (DSNGT),  Deputy Sector Navigator for Advanced Manufacturing  (DSNAM), and the  CTE Regional Pathways Program , organized a professional development event for local educators interested in better understanding Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering, and Global Trade in the region, and learning about career opportunities for their students in these growing industry sectors. Participants included more than 25 educators from high schools and community colleges in North San Diego County, as well as administrators, counselors, and workforce development professionals from Palomar College, Southwestern College, San Diego City College, and Grossmont College.


 
The Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) announced that California received a $650,000 grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to help California small businesses boost trade and exports abroad. GO-Biz and CDFA will use the funds as part of the California State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) to help California small businesses participate in activities like foreign sales trade shows and access foreign markets through trade promotion initiatives.

GO-Biz and CDFA will use the funds to help small businesses participate in activities like foreign export trade show exhibitions, participation in foreign trade missions tailored the sales of products and/or services, foreign market sales trips, subscription services provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as design of international marketing campaigns, and more.

The Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade, in collaboration with the California Community Colleges' Centers of Excellence San Diego/Imperial Region, is conducting a study of jobs in global trade, supply chain management, and logistics in San Diego. The study will analyze the employment and training needs of San Diego companies engaged in these sectors and help identify related occupations. 

The survey is being conducted using an online survey tool and expected to take approximately 15 minutes to complete.  If you are an employer engaged in global trade, supply chain management, and logistics activities as part of your business operations, please take a moment to complete this important survey.


Baja Supplier Day
Industrial Tour 2018

The   San Diego CITD, in collaboration with the Baja California Secretary of Economic Development and the Ensenada Economic Development Corporation, is organizing a Baja Supplier Day Industrial Tour. If you are an existing business that supplies to electronics, medical, and industrial companies, this event is for you.

The program for the day includes:
  • Tour of two manufacturers
  • Opportunity to meet with buyers
  • Presentation by Baja California State officials about supplier opportunities in the region

Cost: $35

Lunch and transportation provided

BajaMak Industrial Expo 2018

The BajaMak Industrial Expo emphasizes the maquiladora supply industry in the Baja California border region and will feature five specialized industries exhibiting their current needs for their manufacturing plants in Mexico. These industries include: Aerospace, Automotive, Medical Products, Metal/Mechanical, and Electronics.

BajaMak has become an important venue in Northwest Mexico for companies looking to tap into the $11 billion suppliers market within the region's manufacturing industry. This year's event is expected to feature over 250 exhibitors (suppliers and buyers) and draw more than 2,500 attendees.

Careers in Supply Chain Management: Student-Executive Speed Networking Event

The  Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) San Diego/Baja Roundtable  is organizing an innovative networking event for students and young professionals. This collaborative speed networking event, which will be hosted by National University, is tailored specifically for students interested in careers in the supply chain management field and provides them with an opportunity to network with supply chain executives from leading companies in the San Diego region. 

Schools collaborating on this event include National University, University of San Diego, San Diego State University, CA State University - San Marcos, and Community Colleges in the region.

SCPro Fundamentals Supply Chain Management Certifications

The  Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade (DSNGT) and the San Diego CITD are offering the opportunity for students and encumbent workers to earn an industry-recognized certification in Supply Chain Management. 

The  SCPro Fundamentals Supply Chain Certification Program is backed by the  Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and offers 8 different certification tracks. This completely online certification program is currently free for students at  Southwestern College , Palomar College , and   San Diego City College  enrolled in international business, business administration, business management, logistics and transportation, or manufacturing engineering technology programs. This is possible due to a grant the DSNGT/San Diego CITD received through the San Diego/Imperial Region Strong Workforce Program and Regional Consortium for Collaborative Program Innovation Projects, which is aligned with the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office "Doing What Matters" initiative.

The certification modules include:
  • Supply Chain Management Principles
  • Customer Service Operations
  • Transportation Operations
  • Warehousing Operations
  • Demand Planning
  • Inventory Management
  • Manufacturing & Service Operations
  • Supply Management & Procurement
Each of these certifications is industry recognized and has proven to be beneficial as students move into the job search market or for existing workers to gain upward mobility. Students interested in this program will be able to start with the Supply Chain Management Principles module and if they pass the proctored exam, they can move forward with other certifications depending on their goals and interests. Students who pass and receive all 8 certifications will receive a CSCMP SCPro Fundamentals Comprehensive Certification.
