Dear TS and TOS members and friends,

June is an interesting month. For those in some parts of the world school is just getting out and the children are excited to begin their summer break. It's the opposite for those in India where school lets out in April and begins again mid-June. I was surprised to learn this until I realized that it's all based on the hottest months being the break months. This is just one little thing that speaks to the diversity of cultures around the world. Learning of various cultural norms and respecting them is important in TOS service work if we are to be able to understand those we work with and for and approach them in a respectful and dignified manner.

Geography and weather can also be factors in our work, especially in areas where natural disasters have occurred. Our Featured Project this quarter tells of several efforts being operated or supported by the TOS in Bhubaneswar, Odisha Region in India, vocational training for impoverished women, an old age home, a Home for orphaned or abandoned girls and a shelter for destitute women. Nancy visited there in February and saw first hand the good work being done.

Ironically, our Latest News this quarter is an appeal for funds to help with clean-up and repair in the same area and of our very own projects that were damaged by cyclone Fani that hit the region just recently. Please help the TOS to continue its good work there.

What is your group doing? We’d like to know and to share it with your fellow TOS members.  Please send information about your activities with good quality photos, to:

Yours in service ,

When I began to practise meditation on compassion, I found that my sense of isolation began to diminish, while at the same time my personal sense of empowerment began to grow. Where once I saw only problems, I started to see solutions. Where once I viewed my own happiness as more important than the happiness of others, I began to see the well-being of others as the foundation of my own peace of mind.

Beyond Suffering
By Suvralina Mohanty
We live and evolve in the lower 3 worlds: Physical, Emotional or Astral and Mental.
Evolution happens by experiences gained in these worlds. Since these are worlds of relativity, not of absolute truth, duality or polarity is the nature of things. This is the reason that in these worlds we cannot know sweetness if we don't know bitterness, cannot know success if we don't know failure, we cannot know happiness if we do not know pain. Having said this, it naturally follows that pain is not only inevitable but is necessary but ...

“The secret of happiness is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less”.

It was the Greek philosopher Socrates who had propounded this concept of minimalism, stated the Convener Sis. Rashna Jehani referring to the consumerist attitude that makes us want to keep shopping instead of pursuing a simple lifestyle that can only come with a change of perception.
