TDOT Driving Transit Forward Across Tennessee

Kaitlyn McClanahan, Public Transportation Section Manager at the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), is our latest guest on Street Talk. Kaitlyn is helping shape the future of transit across Tennessee. Her team supports public transportation systems through funding, planning, and partnerships that improve mobility and accessibility statewide. TDOT distributes nearly $200 million annually in federal and state funding, helping support transit services in all 95 counties across Tennessee. As the state continues to grow, Kaitlyn sees transit as a critical part of connecting people to jobs, healthcare, and opportunity.

For Kaitlyn, the impact of transit goes far beyond infrastructure. “Transit is a lifeline for people who don’t have any other option… it gives them independence,” she shared. She has also seen major advancements in customer experience and technology, helping make transit easier and more accessible for riders. Kaitlyn emphasized the value of partnerships like The TMA Group, saying education and outreach efforts are key to reducing congestion and helping communities understand the benefits of transit. While large projects across the state are exciting, she says the most meaningful successes are often the quiet stories — helping someone get to a job interview, access essential services, or gain greater independence.

Be sure to check out Kaitlyn on our latest Street Talk interview to hear her insights on the future of transit across Tennessee.

Franklin Transit Master Plan: Building the Future of Mobility

The Franklin Transit Authority is looking ahead with a long-term vision for mobility through its Transit Master Plan Study. Developed to guide the future of transportation in the community, the study provides recommendations and a vision-based framework designed to meet the evolving needs of Franklin over the next 10 years. As the community continues to grow, the plan focuses on creating thoughtful, sustainable transportation solutions that improve connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

The study evaluates a variety of transportation service options and scenarios, giving riders, community stakeholders, and the public an opportunity to help shape the future of transit in Franklin. By analyzing projected costs, revenues, ridership trends, and performance metrics, the plan aims to develop a fiscally responsible approach that addresses local, regional, and inter-regional travel needs. Dorris McMillan: Creating Connections Through Transit

Dorris McMillan, a Franklin Transit Board Member and rider, believes transportation is about more than getting from place to place — it’s about building community. Through her work in Alumni and Community Relations at New Hope Academy and her involvement with Franklin Transit, she has seen how transit creates meaningful connections. “We’re a growing community, and we need to move our people,” she shared.

As a rider herself, Dorris says Franklin Transit gives her a deeper connection to the community. From conversations along the ride to experiences shared with students at New Hope Academy, she sees transit as a powerful way to bring people together.

Vanstar’s Economic Impact: Driving Value Across Middle Tennessee

Vanstar is doing more than helping people get to work — it’s creating a lasting economic impact across Middle Tennessee. In FY2026 alone, riders are projected to save more than $1.8 million in commuting costs, averaging $6,351 in annual savings per commuter. Those savings help working families reduce transportation expenses and put more money toward everyday needs.

The impact goes beyond riders. Employers benefit from stronger workforce reliability and retention, while communities see economic growth through increased local spending, reduced congestion, and fewer vehicles on the road. Vanstar continues to show that transportation is about more than mobility — it’s about creating opportunities and strengthening communities.

New Ford Explorers Join the VanStar Fleet

Vanstar is continuing to grow its fleet with the addition of new Ford Explorers, providing riders with even more flexibility and transportation options across Middle Tennessee. Joining an extensive lineup that already includes vehicles such as the Toyota Sienna and passenger vans, the Ford Explorers will help support Vanstar’s expanding rideshare network across 14 counties. Riders can choose a vehicle that best fits the needs of their commute and rideshare group, creating a customized experience designed around comfort and convenience.
