OUR HEARTS HAVE HURT FOR 38 DAYS

Tomorrow, thousands of people will descend on Washington, DC for a rally in support of Israel. Whether you are showing solidarity in person, watching on tv, or there in spirit, we want to say thank you for wearing your heart on you sleeve for all of Israel!

As our hearts are with Israel, take the story of Benzi Elkon with you. His story is a perfect example of someone whose resilience is strengthened by the Israel Guide Dog Center and the generosity of friends around the world.

Soldiering Through Pain

Our incredible friend Benzi served in an IDF elite unit. When his service ended he tried to return to his regular civilian life, but was instead confronted by horrific memories which led to explosive rage. After four months of self-imposed isolation, Benzi was introduced to the Israel Guide Dog Center, and was partnered with his Service Dog, Lugo. Benzi and Lugo have become inseparable friends.

On October 7th, Benzi learned of the devastating news that his dear friends were murdered. Day after day, Benzi's loss has been compounded by

the fact that he lives in the Negev and is constantly unnerved by the sounds of

sirens, the booms of the Iron Dome, and the images seen on the news.

Old Wounds Reopened

PTSD is a wound that never completely heals, and this war reopened Benzi's. It’s been so painful that not even Lugo can always lessen his symptoms.

But because of Lugo, Benzi is determined to forge ahead and channel his energy into meaningful activities. Benzi has been organizing equipment for IDF soldiers and helping his friends at the Israel Guide Dog Center by driving puppies who needed to be rehomed to new families in Haifa.

Paws for Healing

During these challenging weeks, Benzi and Lugo navigate the world together, bringing joy to those they encounter. Children are enchanted by Lugo and find solace in his presence. Benzi, in turn, welcomes the shared affection, finding happiness in connecting with others.

Helping people has given Benzi purpose, and sharing Lugo’s big heart and unconditional love has benefited Benzi, Lugo, and all they meet.

Our hearts, although hurt, are strengthened when we hear about stories like Benzi and Lugo. And the entire Israel Guide Dog Center Family continues to be heartened by our friends around the world.
