Spectacle! Friday June 14th 2-3pm

Cher Parents,

We are hard at work preparing our costumes, scenery, and songs for the End-of-Year performance! This year, we have decided to perform one story as a school-- "Le loup qui voulait faire le tour de monde". Each class has chosen one country to focus on, and we know this will be a show to remember! Lindz (Music Together Teacher) and Peter (Suzuki Piano and General Music Teacher) will be helping us sing some very fun songs. Please add this event to your calendar; we hope to see you there!

Who: The families of L'Ecole Francaise du Maine

What: End-of-Year Spectacle!

When: Friday, June 14th, 2-3 pm

Where: The Community Hall of the South Freeport Church

Merci,

les enfants de EFDM

The entire school decided together who would be performing which continent by a random selection last week, it was quite fun to see what sorts of places each class gets to "visit" in this year's show!

Sharing the Joy of Grandparents Day

Could there be a sweeter tradition than Grandparents and Special Friends Day? We cannot thank our visitors enough for sharing their time with us. So many relatives traveled from both near and far to spend time in the classrooms, complete adorable projects alongside their special students, and maybe learn a word or two of French!

The bustling energy of the day is always alight with proud students able to show off their classroom and learning, matched only by the joyful grandparents and special friends who are reminded of being a kid again.

Thank you to our teachers for all their preparations, administration for all of the behind-the-scenes work, and parent volunteers without whom we could not have had such a successful visitor luncheon after the classroom visit. Until next year!

School Director Emily Smith addressed the Grandparents and Special Friends during the luncheon at South Freeport Community Hall. A special thank you goes to Ben Noyes, Cello Teacher, for his insightful presentation on the similarities between the French Immersion Approach and the Suzuki Method's Mother Tongue Approach developed by violinist Dr. Suzuki in Japan in the 1950s. Additionally, parent Katherine Muller shared her reasons for choosing the French School and her positive experiences in the preschool program over the past three years.

Thank you to our volunteers who made this event possible!

Bravo Suzuki Students!

It truly is wonderful to witness the growth of all Suzuki students between the fall and spring concerts! Bravo to all our piano, cello, and violin students who put their hard work and practice on proud display this week. A special thank you to our music teachers too, for sharing their patience and love of their craft with our students!

Carnival Planning

Wheels are already in motion for this year's School Carnival, an event beloved by all! This event relies heavily on our parent volunteers, without whom we would not be able to bring this magical day to life.

This year's Carnaval will take place on Saturday, June 15th, from 11 am- 2 pm, with a rain-date set for the Last Day of School Tuesday June 18th. We kindly ask parents to please sign-up for at least one duty/task in assisting with the carnival preparation and implementation to ensure our students fully enjoy this wonderful day which celebrates their achievements this year .

Of course, signing up for more than one task is also encouraged and appreciated!

  • Funds from the Parent Association Account will reimburse all shopping for supplies (excluding donated raffle items).

  • Example themes for raffle baskets: "Maine Made," "Movie Night," "Beach/Summer," "France," etc.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to Emily, office@frenchschool.me, with any questions regarding the specific volunteer roles.

Learning about Community Roles

This week in Petite Section we chose our roles for the end of year spectacle and started making our costumes! We also had a wonderful visit from one of our parents who is an ICU doctor. She spoke with us about how she helps keep people well in our community and showed us some of the instruments she uses for her job. Our little researchers were riveted and had many questions about how to use the instruments and what parts of the body they help. Great fun!

Welcome Spring!

Sun hats, dandelions, black flies, oh my! Spring is certainly in full swing these days and the Moyenne Section invited the rest of the Maternelle classes on their seasonal trip around Sayle's Field this week. No strangers to getting their hands dirty, Moyenne students are also preparing some seedlings for the deeper dirt outside. These activities support the learning in their recent IB units, one on How the World Works where they are exploring how seeds transform and what they need to survive and another on Where We are in Place and Time where they consider how nature changes with each season. Bravo!

And the Country Is.....

Having selected the continent of Europe through their random lottery amongst all classes, the Grande Section class then began to "vote" for which country they would perform during the End-of-year Show! To know the winner, you'll have to attend the event itself and see who they chose (or it is quite likely you might overhear some very excited Kindergarteners talking about their costumes!)

Bird Migration at Bradbury Mountain

It was a perfect chance to explore Bradbury Mountain for our Elementary students earlier this month! We were lucky enough to chance a visit on one of the final days of the season where the bird migration specialists were perched atop the "mountain" and able to share their knowledge (and cool equipment!) about bird watching in the area. We hope to make this an annual visit!

Le Jardin de CE2+CM1

Anaelle's class has carefully tended to a good selection of seedlings these past few weeks, some of which are ready now for a new home in the ground. Students have spent time daily weeding, watering, and prepping the school garden bed: take a look at a drop-off or pick-up time soon and see what's growing! It's amazing how quickly plants grow when you're having fun!

I Love to Read Challenge & Invention Projects

In English Language Arts Class, students have been working on their invention projects. This co-facilitated project by Anaelle and Sarah has students solving everyday problems with an invention of their own, building a prototype and creating an advertisement. Be on the lookout for an invite into the classroom to hear their pitches for their creations!

Elementary students are also using every spare minute to rack in the time for our reading challenge! For the entire month of May, Fabien's, Anaelle's and Sarah’s classes will be participating in the We Love to Read Challenge. Our goal is to collectively read 20,000 minutes during the month of May. Students will keep track of their time reading in school and at home on a bookmark and then pass the bookmark in to be counted towards the total. If we reach our goal of 20,000 minutes, we will have an ice cream party in celebration!

Yearbook Order Form

The annual yearbook is a great keepsake for every student's bookshelf at home. With pictures from the classroom, playground, and various events and trips throughout the year, it's always fun to look back and see how much we've grown and all that we've learned in a year! To place an order for the 2023-2024 school yearbook, please follow this link. A group order will be made later this month for printing, and books will be distributed in mid-June. Be sure to place your order now to ensure you receive a copy!

Exploring the Journeys of our Graduates

As we reach the end of the academic year, it’s an ideal moment to look back on the impressive and varied paths taken by the alumni of The French School of Maine (L' École Française du Maine—EFDM) over the past 22 years. Renowned for its strong French immersion program, EFDM has equipped students for academic excellence and global citizenship.

Varied High School Pathways

After their foundational education at EFDM, students often transition to both local public schools (such as Yarmouth, Falmouth, CVA) and independent high schools (including Waynflete, NYA, The Putney School in Vermont, The French American School of San Diego, and Lycée Pierre Loti in Istanbul). These institutions, known for their rigorous academics and multicultural environments, reflect the school’s emphasis on comprehensive education. Specialized programs, like the International Baccalaureate at Greely High School in Cumberland and arts-focused institutions like The Master's School in NY, also cater to our students' diverse interests and goals.

Top-Tier College Admissions

The journey extends into higher education, where EFDM alumni excel in various academic settings. Many have gained admission to world-class universities, including Ivy League schools like Harvard and Yale, technical institutes like MIT, and international universities such as Oxford in England, the University of Edinburgh and St Andrews in Scotland, and Science Po in Paris. This wide-reaching success underscores the adaptability and preparedness of our students, who leverage the skills and knowledge acquired at EFDM to thrive globally.

Success Beyond Academia

While many students pursue conventional paths through renowned universities, EFDM's definition of success is inclusive and broad. Our alumni excel in personal and professional endeavors beyond traditional academics. From creative fields like music at the École Normale de Musique in Paris to rigorous programs at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, our graduates make their mark. Additionally, EFDM takes pride in alumni who are top athletes representing national and Olympic teams in skiing, ice hockey, figure skating, golf, and sailing, as well as those who have succeeded as actors in Hollywood and Broadway.

Alumni Achievement Highlight

Many of our alumni continue to play the violin, piano, guitar, or cello, instruments they learned following the Suzuki method at EFDM. This long-term engagement with music underscores the lasting impact of their education and the well-rounded skills they developed during their time at our school.

DELF and DALF Certifications

Many of our alumni pursue DELF and DALF certifications as a natural progression in their language-learning journey. These certifications, which validate their French proficiency, are particularly beneficial for academic and career opportunities. The structured learning at EFDM prepares students for the comprehensive listening, speaking, reading, and writing tests required by these exams. Aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), these certifications enhance students’ credentials and global perspectives, opening doors to higher education and job prospects in international business, diplomacy, and cultural management. The cultural immersion at EFDM enriches their understanding of French culture, further enhancing their qualifications.

In Conclusion

The journeys of our alumni are diverse and impressive. Whether their paths lead to a liberal arts college in the U.S., a science institute in Europe, or beyond, they all start with the foundational experiences at The French School. Here, students gain academic knowledge and a broader understanding of the world, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of a dynamic global landscape. More than 95% of our alumni have graduated from college, and many are currently enrolled in graduate school programs.

Below: Alumni from The French School of Maine have earned degrees from a wide range of High Schools, colleges, and universities, a noteworthy achievement given the school's average yearly enrollment of 80 students from pre-K to 6th grade!

More Opportunities for Host Families: Summer Camp!

This summer, we have a wonderful new crew of camp counselors arriving from France and staying in Maine for the season! We would love to offer them the full experience of living with an American host family. Whether you are only able to host for one week or a few weeks, we would love to piece together a plan for these exchange teachers!

Camille Le Siou and Enola Le Boëdec, student teachers from the University of Brittany at Brest - France (UBO), will work this summer at camp; they recently completed a six-week internship at the French American School of Tampa Bay. During their practicum, Camille and Enola demonstrated exceptional dedication and talent in working with students across various grade levels.

Hosting a French Camp Counselor offers a rich cultural exchange and language learning opportunity. Do not hesitate to contact Willy for more information about hosting a summer camp counselor: wlebihan@frenchschool.me

What is an IB education?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) is for students aged 3-12. The PYP prepares students to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them.
