A special view near Suttons Bay. Pure Michigan.

Irresistible rock hunting.

Report:
Best on Earth
. Have your bucket or pockets ready, and wade in. Local expert notes, “Michigan is home to the most varieties of stones in the entire world.”
Did you know the coral that formed Petoskey stones went extinct before dinosaurs were born? Best beaches for hunting: Leland/Van’s Beach, Northport/Peterson Park, and just down the road at Empire Beach.

. Make one a prized addition to your porch or patio and benefit the local Chamber’s many roles.
Our Adirondack chair drew lively bidding last year. Hope this year’s “Iris Profusion” by Gretchen Knoblock draws same interest. LaBecasse’s chair (pictured) by Julie Keck should be strong, too.

Wonderful musicians and inventive performance.
|
|
Loved the imaginative rendition of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” by the Riverside Players. “African Queen” is this weekend with Glen Arbor Players. Soothing or spirited sets at wineries, restaurants, and staged venues too numerous to list.

Paradise comes with a warning, too.

Ever wonder about “unfit” folks who slide down Lookout #9/10 to the water? Here it is.
Sign at the top is fair caution.
Fire department often must rescue those misjudging agility, strength, hydration, time, and the 450 ft. height…especially when looking up. High water means no beach for hike to – or rescue from -- Empire, if climbing back up is too daunting. Heard sirens headed there twice as we were writing today.
Inflatables are causing issues as well. Six-year-old on a unicorn raft, pulled by Lake Michigan waves, floated beyond parents’ reach and 1 ½ miles out. Miraculous rescue took more than an hour. She heeded the shouted call DO NOT LEAVE YOUR RAFT until lifeboat got her. So fortunate.

Farmers’ Markets and Farm
Stands bursting with bounty.
|
Ah, August. Plentiful crops coming in after delay by wet, cool spring. Sweet corn has arrived. Washed cherries everywhere. Homegrown tomatoes. Strawberries are over, but oh those blueberries! Fresh ingredients all for the inn’s breakfasts. And oversized flowers for the table.

Can't end without a recipe.

Signature Honey Vanilla Granola
Been served all 19 seasons we’ve owned the Glen Arbor Bed & Breakfast and Cottages, and always a favorite. Love the combination of ingredients. Add ½ c. brown sugar, 1 c. pecans and 1 t. cinnamon, plus 2 more tablespoons canola oil for extra flavor. Yum! Could even be healthy.
