The Commercial Fisheries Research Center

(CFRF)

In response to gaps in data collection and monitoring from the science community, the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation (CFRF) was started in 2004 by commercial fishermen. CFRF is a non-profit, private foundation that conducts collaborative fisheries research as well as educational projects. Through their work, CFRF aims to achieve sustainable fisheries for commercial fishers, consumers of seafood, and the public. This work is carried out by soliciting input on research, developing industry based data collection programs, facilitating the development of working partnerships, and communicating the results of their research to the public.

CFRF works with approximately fifty fishermen to research various fisheries including crab, whelk, black sea bass, and scallops. Some ongoing goals of CFRF include filling data gaps, communicating the science to fishers and consumers, creating opportunities in the fishing industry, recovering ghost gear, and more. The team at the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation currently has twenty-six active projects. The research that these fishermen contribute to directly impacting the fisheries management that they partake in. CFRF is based out of Rhode Island, but their work spans to much of New England.

Meet CFRF Executive Director:

Dave Bethoney

Dave became the Executive Director of CFRF in March of 2020. In his day-to-day work, Dave oversees groups of researchers conducting various projects, as well as applying for funding, aiding the fishermen and their success, and working to further connections. He says that his favorite part of the job is getting to see his team achieve successful outcomes with meaningful impacts. Dave wants CFRF to be a catalyst and bridge to the science behind fisheries. He would like the public to know that CFRF is an educational resource that is available to them. Dave got into his line of work because he wanted to pursue his interest in science while simultaneously helping the industry.

Recipe of the month!

Buying Direct off the boat in Galilee

What better way to support local fishermen than buying your crustaceans directly off the boats? The fleet in Galilee sells lobster and crab direct off the dock. When available, you can stop by and find various fishermen selling their catch. It is recommended that you text prior to arriving to check availability.
