ļ»æRI Seafood in Review

We are immensely grateful for the support that RI Seafood has continued to receive over the course of 2023.The Seafood Marketing Collaborative (SMC) celebrated 12 years since its inception. Our success would not be possible without our wonderful seafood partners, to whom we are very thankful.

In the last year, the RI Seafood campaign has expanded to 82 seafood venues throughout the Ocean State including seafood markets, restaurants, direct sellers, and wholesale. A full interactive Google Map of these partners can be found here.

RI Seafood hit some exciting milestones throughout the year, including reaching more than 2,000 followers on Instagram and exceeding 8,800 followers on Facebook. We attended more than 25 events including the Taste of Rhode Island, National Oyster Day at Narragansett Brewery, and Dave's Fresh Marketplace Local Vendor Days! We continue to produce this monthly newsletter, which in the last year has grown to over 500 recipients!

From April 23-29, we celebrated our 7th Annual Quahog week which was our most successful quahog week yet! We had 50 participating venues running quahog specials during the week and held two incredibly successful events at Narragansett Brewery and the Guild Warren with a combined 500+ person attendance, and we look forward to making Quahog Week bigger and better than ever in May 2024!

We launched two new publications featuring local seafood and our favorite ways to cook it! Sponsored by Dave's Fresh Marketplace and Andy Moran Photography, RI Seafood launched its Summer Seafood Series and a Fall Fishes Seafood Series cookbook! Both can be found at your local Dave's Marketplace, virtually at https://seafood.ri.gov/local-species/recipes-resources, your local library, and DEM Offices, or message us for your very own copy!

Continue to follow along in the New Year to be the first to know about seafood events, receive seasonal recipes with fresh and local species, get to know those in the seafood industry, and more!

Ways to Celebrate Seafood this

Holiday Season

The warm summer months may have passed, but the chilly winter months are a great time to celebrate fall and winter fishes! Instead of slurping ice-cold oysters and little necks to beat the heat, stop into your local seafood market or restaurant for classics like chowder and warm lobster rolls. These cozy comfort fishes are best when shared with friends and family around fires, on movie nights, and for holiday celebrations. Rhode Islandā€™s seafood economy doesnā€™t stop when the nights get cold. Our fishermen are dedicated to supplying fresh and local catches all year-round!

As the holidays approach, many Rhode Islanders celebrate with seafood, whether its indulging in the Feast of the Seven Fishes, preparing Christmas Eve Lutefisk, hogging the crab dip on New Yearsā€™ Eve, enjoying Bacalao a la VizcaĆna, or creating new traditions.

Feast of 7 Fishes

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a traditional Italian-American celebration that takes place on Christmas Eve and brings families and friends together before Christmas Day. Originating in Southern Italy, this tradition has Christian roots but here in the Ocean State itā€™s a celebration for everyone. Traditionally seven seafood dishes are prepared, consisting of fish, shellfish and various other seafoods. Here in the Ocean State, there are endless opportunities to support your local seafood businesses when you are preparing your Feast!

Celebrate your own seven fishes and create dishes with local Rhode Island seafood! Support small local seafood businesses by using the local seafood finder!
