MAMC awarded $1 million toward new facility

---A new headquarters for Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) is one step closer to reality thanks to a $1 million donation from the Gene Haas Foundation.

---In recognition of the contribution, MAMC will name the new facility’s 8,000-square-foot CNC machining training center the Gene Haas Advanced Machining Lab, according to Director Derek Scarbro. Marshall University officials have designated a new MAMC headquarters as a top priority. Fundraising is underway for the $20 million, 55,000-square-foot headquarters to be constructed on the former ACF Industries site on Third Avenue in Huntington.

---Kathy Looman, Executive Director of the Gene Haas Foundation, said MAMC was selected for the $1 million award because of the passion of its staff and the creativity of its program to educate the next generation of skilled machinists.

---“These exclusive capital grants endorse the best CNC training programs in North America and

Europe,” Looman said. “Candidate programs are teaching the most advanced manufacturing processes prior to their selection for this honor. Their exemplary programs are in high demand … and exhibit excellent relationships with and serve the needs of local industry.”

Tri-State manufacturer achieves quality standard with MAMC assistance

---A Tri-state area manufacturer operating from facilities in Ironton, Ohio, and Wheelersburg, Ohio, has been recommended for its first-ever registration to ISO 9001: 2015, an international quality management standard that strengthens its position in manufacturing and engineering markets.

---The ISO recommendation for American Hydraulic Services’ (AHS) registration comes after assistance from Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC). Its new registration promises to open new doors, expand the manufacturer’s U.S. market opportunities and present diversification opportunities in international markets.
---“Increasing business opportunities is another way that manufacturers can succeed and support their workers with good paying jobs, which is key

to a strong economy," said Derek Scarbro, MAMC Director. “We’re excited that AHS has committed to enhance its operations and customer service with the ISO 9001 standard. A quality approach will contribute to today’s modern manufacturing – a core industry that continues to drive our economy.”

- TRAINWV INSTRUCTOR NETWORK

Portal connects manufacturing professionals to teaching opportunities

---Experienced manufacturing professionals who are interested in making the career transition to teaching now have a new resource to connect them to job opportunities in West Virginia.

---Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) has launched the TrainWV Instructor Network (www.trainwv.org), an online portal where individuals can submit information about their qualifications and experience. When high school, community & technical college, and trades school jobs are posted that match their credentials, MAMC will notify them about the open positions. They choose whether to apply.

---It takes less than five minutes to join the TrainWV Instructor Network, according to MAMC Director Derek Scarbro.

---“Schools across our region often struggle to hire qualified instructors to teach machining, welding, robotics, industrial maintenance and other

manufacturing-related classes,” Scarbro said. “Meanwhile, those considering a new career in education often don’t know where to turn. The TrainWV Instructor Network is built to bridge this divide.”

- IN-DEMAND OPPORTUNITIES

Multiple open houses to highlight MAMC's career skills programs

---Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) is hosting a series of open houses for individuals interested in learning more about its career skills programs in Machinist Technology/CNC, Welding Technology and SMART (Systems Maintenance, Automation and Robotics Technology).

---During the informal events, attendees will meet instructors, tour the hands-on learning labs and receive information about how they can earn a one-year certificate, two-year degree and individual industry credentials in these in-demand industrial sectors.

South Charleston

---The first open house is Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in South Charleston (100 Angus E. Peyton Dr.). MAMC offers its machinist program in the Kanawha Valley in partnership with BridgeValley Community and Technical College. Prospective

students and their family and friends will tour the CNC Machining Technology Lab, talk with instructors and learn about financial aid options, including West Virginia Invests. A second South Charleston open house is set for March 5, same location and time.

Employers invited to student reverse job fair, SMART program open house

---Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) invites industry representatives to a double-feature event March 11 in Huntington: A reverse job fair and an open house of the newly expanded SMART (Systems Maintenance, Automation and Robotics Technology) career skills program.

---The free events will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at MAMC Huntington, 1050 Fourth Ave. Lunch will be provided.

---Participants are asked to register at www.mfg.marshall.edu/March11.

---For the reverse job fair, MAMC Machinist Technology/CNC, Welding Technology and SMART students will be positioned at individual stations to talk with companies about internships, prospective job opportunities and to share their resumes. Industry officials can visit with students from the three disciplines in a round-robin style format, interviewing all students or only those whose field of study matches individual companies’ current employment needs.

Running concurrently with the reverse job fair, the SMART open house will offer a behind-the-scenes look at MAMC’s newest career skills program.
