MY Voice Project Newsletter

Before we close out 2023, MY Voice is looking forward to marking UN Human Rights Day at the Human Rights Festival, hosted by the Bar Council Human Rights Committee. This year’s theme is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All,” sentiments which resonate deeply with MY Voice’s objectives to combat child and forced labor, increase access to remedy, and help ensure dignity at work for workers across Malaysia’s palm oil and garment industries.

The Human Rights Festival will be held in APW Bangsar on the 10th December 2023. MY Voice will be participating in a pop-up booth to showcase our ongoing initiatives that seek to elevate worker voice and strengthen support networks for workers. We will be sharing about multiple opportunities to collaborate with the project.

Entrance is free. We hope to see you there!

Project Updates

Advancing Workers' Rights in the Garment Industry

Our recent partnerships with private sector leaders are making significant strides towards achieving worker rights and ethical practices in the garment industry.

In September, we initiated a vital partnership with Classita (M) Sdn Bhd, a key player in the garment sector. We introduced them to the concept of a worker-voice driven social compliance system, a pivotal approach for safeguarding worker well-being throughout their supply chain. Over the next couple of years, MY Voice will work closely with Classita to help them implement this strategy and integrate it as part of their regular operations.

In October, we extended this collaboration to Ramatex Textiles Industrial Sdn Bhd, another industry influencer. Together, we're crafting a two-year work plan to drive progress in worker rights. Read more about our kick-off with Ramatex.

The dedication shown by our partners at Classita and Ramatex underscores their commitment to fostering a more responsible and sustainable garment industry in Malaysia.

Additional Funding Received for Child Labor Remediation Hub

We are thrilled to announce the addition of Nu Skin to our collaborative effort aimed at advancing child rights and protection in the palm oil sector. Nu Skin's generous contribution in 2024 will play a key role in supporting MY Voice's initiative focused on establishing a Child Labour Remediation Hub. With this grant, we will be able to intensify our efforts in raising awareness about child labour prevention and remediation, build capacity of relevant community-based civil society organizations to provide supportive services, and provide much-needed assistance to children and their families affected by this issue. Together, we take a significant step forward in creating a more sustainable and responsible palm oil industry that prioritizes the welfare of its workers and respects the rights of children.

MY Voice recently held validation workshops on our Child Labour Remediation Hub Model, focusing on the palm oil sector. The workshops involved key stakeholders, field practitioners, and experts to validate the remediation model and finalize its approach. Participants agreed that the proposed model is both relevant to Malaysia’s palm oil industry generally and adaptable to the unique contexts within the country. MY Voice will be piloting the model in 2024 and there are many ways to get involved. Learn more.
