Meet Dr. Olga Chapa

Olga, what is your personal narrative? What key moments in your life led you to where you are?

My academic journey as a first-generation college graduate was possible because I had my support along the way. The family role-modeling, albeit unknown to me at the time, molded me to be interested in business and to believe in myself, regardless of circumstances. Also, organizations such as The PhD Project were essential for students like myself and members of underrepresented groups such as minority females to aid in the completion of a PhD program. 

A key factor in my journey of becoming a professor began with my background. My father and his family were migrant workers. In hindsight, I picked my work ethic from them, especially my Tias (aunts). If my father had continued his hard-working style, things would have been different. However, mental illness struck our family, and my father became disabled. My childhood changed forever. We became dependent on government aid and the stigma of this type of diagnosis and low economic resources.  

My Mexican immigrant mother showed me that circumstances are just that, circumstances. She attended night school to learn English, earned her GED, and became an American citizen. To make a better life for us, she also became the top Avon and Stanley representative in her area! The woman could sell you rocks if she wanted to. That was my introduction to salesmanship. Since we were on government aid, she had to find work and I ended up in a childcare center from 6 am – 6 pm. Her absence throughout the day affected us greatly. I had to grow up very fast and learn to be self-sufficient.

My sister and I became first-generation college students. I did not enter academia straight from high school. First, I served my country in the US Army intelligence and learned a great deal as an intelligence analyst. After an honorable discharge, I became self-employed alongside my mother and experienced the educational childcare center industry firsthand. It is through this process that I discovered my love of teaching.

Another key factor is my access to a Hispanic Serving Institute, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (formally UT-Pan Am). I began attending the local university part-time. After 12 years of primarily part-time attendance, I graduated with a BBA. After two years, my mind desired more. I applied for and was accepted into the MBA program specializing in management. I then applied for and was accepted into the Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. project was a key factor in my development to who I am today. Their service was invaluable, and the journey became more manageable and doable. I graduated in 2009 in Business Administration. My dissertation based on the Latina earned the Highly Commended Award, Human Resource Management category, 2009 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research. The most powerful lesson I share with my students is that their paths (like mine) may be different, but we all end up at the same destination.  

How do you use your role as a professor at UHV to advocate for greater equity for students of color in college and First Gen to college students?

I chose the UHV specifically because it aimed to become a Hispanic Serving Institute, which it did achieve. I am a role model for all students, but my position means more to female students and students of color. My students are highly diverse in ethnicity, gender, abilities, and age. I have had many students in first-generation statuses in my courses, undergraduate and graduate levels. I have also encouraged my graduate students and graduate grading assistants from various ethnic groups to seek a higher education such as a Ph.D. A few have followed that advice. When they are enrolled in my class, my role is to treat every student equally and provide the most engaging learning environment for all students to gain knowledge and earn high scores. I also try to spread the love of learning. 

I would add that there are reasons for families to experience first-generation college graduates even if they have been working families for generations. Given my obligations to the family business and culturally defined gender expected care of my family members, I had to be in the same or close to the same geographical area. If not for a university in my area, I would be in a different place. I would say to the students who are not close to a university to seek alternatives (i.e., online or hybrid courses) and continue to set an example for family members, their children, and others to emulate.

Moreover, I also push for less time pressure associated with completing a degree plan. It is terrific if that is possible, but if not, that is okay too. I am living proof that it can be accomplished and accomplished well. I share my stories with my students and have heard from past students. For example, I received an email once from a male student who asked if I remembered when I told his undergraduate class to continue their academic journey, and he replied, but we must work. I told him and the class that the solution is to attend as they could after their BBA—even one class per semester but completing a master's program should be the master plan. That is what he did while working, and he wanted to email me to let me know that my words encouraged him, and he not only accomplished the degree but was promoted to an administrative job that he had only dreamt he would one day possess. 

What advice would you give to the next generation of Inclusive Inspirational Leaders?

Remember that a leadership position entails great responsibility. Work on identifying and recognizing your own biases and perceptions, which are to be left outside of the position. It will help if you always think strategically and professionally. The decisions made by you or contributed by you should also reflect the inclusion and well-being of all stakeholders. 

Lead with compassion. Never forget the marginalized. I was part of the brown group, the female group, the older students, and a disabled family member group. I can only imagine how challenging it would have been if I had not had the right people in my path.

Student Leaders Speak 2021 Report Finds Shift to Remote Learning Hardest on BIPOC College Students

Diverse students felt they did not have a seat at the table when pandemic related decisions were made and call on college leaders to include them. The report is a joint initiative between Every Learner Everywhere and GlobalMindED with support from The Equity Project LLC


(DENVER, CO – May 6, 2021) — A new report based on data-driven surveys of 25 GlobalMindED Ambassadors representing a larger group of 102 students from 47 colleges in 22 states found that without exception, the shift from on campus learning to remote college instruction has most negatively impacted poverty-affected, first generation, Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students. Their voices are shared in the report, which concludes that college presidents, CEO’s and government leaders cannot solve problems for these students without including them at the table.

Student Leaders Speak 2021: Student Voices Informing Educational Strategies, conducted via surveys, interviews and informal feedback from mentors, illustrates a lack of national and collegiate preparedness to address the near-immediate shift from in-classroom to remote learning. Students reported a lack of access to an engaged faculty and essential technology while underscoring that their greatest support and strength has come from interaction and collaboration within their dedicated student community. Highlights include:

  • Communities represented included BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), first generation, living with disabilities, white poverty-affected, LGBTQ+, Veteran, Online, and ESL/Immigrant.

  • 100 percent acknowledged two or more barriers such as lack of internet access, lack of focused learning environment, no personal device, health concerns, unemployment, language barriers, learning from their beds/bedrooms and/or managing younger siblings.

  • 100 percent described absent or unavailable campus support systems beyond the instructor, equating the learning experience and cost of same as being grossly out of alignment.

  • 80 percent disapproved of the online learning experience, citing inconsistency in faculty ability to educate using technological tools and practices. In essence, the virtual environment was not mirroring or upholding the most important elements of the in-person environment, as some faculty were not adequately trained in the COVID-caused emotional/social needs of students.

  • 70 percent relied on peer support as compared to more formal support systems. Students were learning and growing by being together – something critical to note during times of both social and physical distancing.

The report calls on college administrators to implement actionable steps to ease the challenging demands of remote learning and smooth the transition from college to professional careers.

  • Colleges should do a better job of providing a platform for the voices of poverty-affected and first generation students to be heard.

  • Faculty needs to gain a better grasp of digital tools, technologies and strategies.

  • Advisors should recruit student coaches and peers to help newer students from diverse communities.

  • Policy makers must improve access to transportation, housing, child care, financing, lower tuition/debt and career opportunities for first generation/diverse students.
