Latino Commission on AIDS Honors Visionary Leaders in Public Health, Research, Telehealth, Arts and Culture at Annual Cielo Gala


Event Demonstrated Continuing Commitment to Health Equity and Ending HIV

New York, NY, June 11, 2026 — The Latino Commission on AIDS, in partnership with the Hispanic Health Network, celebrated its annual Cielo Gala on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the iconic Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Continuing the powerful theme “Designing a World Without AIDS,” and reflecting on “Then. Now. Next.” the event highlighted the ongoing unequal impact of HIV on Latine communities and the need to protect and empower future generations in the fight to end HIV.

As one of the nation’s leading events celebrating advancements in the fight against HIV and honoring those propelling health equity, this year’s Cielo Gala gathered over 400 guests in support of the organization’s goal to build a world where HIV is no longer a public health threat and all communities have equitable access to prevention, care, support services free of stigma and discrimination. The 2026 Cielo Gala award recipients, each recognized for extraordinary dedication to improving health outcomes and championing underserved communities, included:

• Dr. Helen Arteaga, Deputy Mayor, Health and Human Services, City of New York, with the Esperanza (Hope) Award for her transformational leadership in community-centered healthcare and her unwavering commitment to advancing health equity for immigrant and Latine communities.
• Gregory Millett, MPH, Vice President and Director of Public Policy at amfAR, with the Dennis deLeon Voz de Compromiso Award for his national leadership in HIV research, policy innovation, and advocacy efforts that illuminate and address racial and ethnic disparities in HIV.
• Mario Pérez, Director of the Division of HIV and STD Programs for Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, with the Compañero Award in recognition of his decades-long contributions to HIV prevention, community partnerships, and systems-level improvements that have reshaped public health responses across diverse communities.
• MISTR, with the Pioneer Award, accepted by CEO Tristan Schukraft, for its groundbreaking telehealth model that provides discreet, end-to-end HIV prevention and long-term HIV care.
• Milagros Medina-Cerdeira, Broadway and Hollywood Make-up Artist, with the Creative Visionary Award, recognizing her power to shape culture through art and elevate Latine visibility in the entertainment industry. 

Naming of NextGen Cultural Ambassador Motivates a New Generation

The Latino Commission on AIDS also named acclaimed ballroom icon, advocate, and cultural trailblazer Honey Valentín Gonzales, whose stage name is Honey Balenciaga, as the NextGen Cultural Ambassador, spotlighting the importance of intergenerational leadership, cultural visibility, and continued investment in prevention, education, healthcare access, and advocacy.

As part of the evening’s program, Honey Balenciaga choreographed and presented a special ballroom performance, celebrating the artistry, resilience, and cultural influence of the ballroom community. Award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa hosted the evening and the iconic nightlife personality DJ Lina Bradford provided musical beats throughout the night.

For nearly four decades, the Latino Commission on AIDS has worked to address the entrenched inequities that fuel the spread and impact of HIV in Hispanic/Latino communities nationwide. In the face of federal cuts that threaten the healthcare infrastructure that has sustained thousands of people living with HIV, the 2026 Cielo Gala reaffirmed the Latino Commission on AIDS’ commitment to advancing culturally responsive programs, building leadership pipelines, strengthening community networks, and ensuring that public health systems meet the needs of all communities.

La Comisión Latina sobre el SIDA honra a líderes visionarios en salud pública, investigación, telesalud, artes y cultura durante su Gala Anual Cielo

El evento demostró un compromiso continuo por la equidad en salud y para derrotar al VIH

Nueva York, NY, 11 de junio, 2026 — La Comisión Latina sobre el SIDA, junto a la Red de Salud Hispana, celebró su Gala Anual Cielo el viernes 5 de junio 2026 en el emblemático Cipriani en Wall Street de la ciudad de Nueva York. Bajo el poderoso lema "Diseñando un mundo sin SIDA" y reflexionando sobre los conceptos de "Antes. Ahora. Futuro", el evento destacó el impacto desigual que el VIH sigue teniendo en las comunidades latinas y la necesidad de proteger y empoderar a las futuras generaciones en la lucha para derrotar al VIH.

Siendo uno de los eventos más destacados del país en que se celebra los avances en la lucha contra el VIH y reconoce a quienes impulsan la equidad en salud, la Gala Cielo de este año reunió a más de 400 invitados quienes apoyaron el objetivo de la organización: construir un mundo donde el VIH ya no represente una amenaza para la salud pública y todas las comunidades tengan acceso equitativo a la prevención, la atención y los servicios de apoyo, libres de estigma y discriminación. • Mario Pérez, director de la División de Programas de VIH y ETS del Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado de Los Angeles, galardonado con el reconocimiento Compañero en reconocimiento a sus décadas de contribuciones a la prevención del VIH, las alianzas comunitarias y las mejoras a nivel sistémico que han transformado las respuestas de salud pública en diversas comunidades.
• MISTR, galardonada con el reconocimiento Pionero, recibido por su director ejecutivo, Tristan Schukraft, por su innovador modelo de telesalud que ofrece servicios discretos e integrales de prevención y atención a largo plazo sobre el VIH.
• Milagros Medina-Cerdeira, maquilladora de Broadway y Hollywood, galardonada con el reconocimiento Visionaria Creativa en reconocimiento a su capacidad para moldear la cultura a través del arte y elevar la visibilidad de la comunidad latina en la industria del entretenimiento.

El nombramiento de la Embajadora Cultural de NextGen (próxima generación) motiva a una nueva generación

La Comisión Latina también nombró a Honey Valentín Gonzales —conocida artísticamente como Honey Balenciaga—, aclamado ícono del ballroom, activista y pionera cultural, como Embajadora Cultural de NextGen, destacando la importancia del liderazgo intergeneracional, la visibilidad cultural y la inversión continua en prevención, educación, acceso a la atención médica y defensa de derechos.

Como parte del programa de la velada, Honey Balenciaga coreografió y presentó una actuación especial de ballroom, celebrando el talento artístico, la resiliencia y la influencia cultural de esta comunidad. La galardonada periodista Maria Hinojosa condujo el evento, mientras que la icónica DJ Lina Bradford amenizó la noche con su música.

Durante casi cuatro décadas, la Comisión Latina ha trabajado para responder las desigualdades arraigadas que alimentan nuevos casos y el impacto del VIH en las comunidades hispanas/latinas en todo el país. Ante los recortes federales que amenazan la infraestructura en salud pública que ha sostenido a miles de personas que viven con el VIH, la Gala Cielo 2026 reafirmó el compromiso de la Comisión de promover programas culturalmente adaptados, fomentar el desarrollo de líderes, fortalecer las redes de organizaciones comunitarias y garantizar que los sistemas de salud pública logren responder a las necesidades de todas las comunidades.
