Why We Cruise
The Brigantine Matthew Turner under full sail on San Francisco Bay! I don't think there is a more beautiful sight! For the past ten years Lats&Atts has been having raffles at our Cruisers Parties all over the world, and the proceeds went to helping build this beautiful boat. Why this one, you ask? Simple, the CEO of The Educational Tallship Foundation, that built this boat, is Captain Alan Olson. And Captain Alan Olson taught Bob Bitchin how to sail while captaining the Stone Witch (the flagship for Greenpeace) back in the late 70s and early 80s! She is now sailing and teaching kids how teamwork on a boat works!
Autonomous Ship?
A fully autonomous ship tracing the journey of the Mayflower is being built by a UK-based team, with help from tech firm IBM. The Mayflower Autonomous Ship, or MAS, will launch from Plymouth in the UK in September 2020. Its voyage will mark the 400th anniversary of the pilgrim ship which brought European settlers to America in 1620. IBM is providing artificial intelligence systems for the ship. The vessel will make its own decisions on its course and collision avoidance, and will even make expensive satellite phone calls back to base if it deems it necessary.

Croatia Sail Now Set for May 2022
The pandemic said we couldn't do it on the original date, May 2020, so we re-set it to May 2021. But once again, too much Covid going around. It was rescheduled for 2021 and now for 2022. Dates are May 14 through the 21st. Leaving out of Trogir, which is close to Split, Croatia. The event was sold out, but there are some who cannot make the new dates -- so there will be some berths available. There may only be a few. If interested, email Jody and we will see what cabins we have.
Round The Horn Now Open For Reservations!

NOW OPEN for reservations!
A $300 deposit holds your space!
Reservations must be made directly through the ship company.
We are setting up a real adventure. The date? Set for March 8-12, 2022. No, not on small sailboats. We have reserved 20 cabins on a 100-cabin, small adventure cruising boat. It will be a four-day cruise starting in Punta Arenas, Chile, through the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Pass.
We will land on glaciers, go ashore with penguins, and then "Round the Horn"! This has been on our bucket list for years. Also, we are planning on including an additional few days with a land tour as well, since we're gonna be down there anyway, right?
Side Trip Through Tierra del Fuego National Park
The cost for the land portion will be approximately $500 including transport, meals and hotels. (This is an estimate until we can re-confirm rates after the hotels re-open!)
An optional "land-portion" will include a bus from Ushuaia, Argentina, where we finish the voyage, through the Tierra del Fuego National Park, and then back to Punta Arenas, Chile. Due to the Covid pandemic we are unable to finalize these plans, but as soon as we can verify the details, we will get them to you! It will be a 2-3 day event, and the cost cover hotels, transportation & Meals.
When the final plans for the side trip are confirmed, you can reserve your spot directly with us. All we need is a $50 deposit, so be sure to send Jody your email address so we can keep you updated as this comes closer to fruition. You can email [email protected].
Hatteras Sold To Bass Pro Shops Affiliate
White River Marine Group, a boatbuilder affiliate of Springfield, Mo.-based Bass Pro Shops, has acquired Hatteras Yachts. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper made the announcement yesterday in New Bern.
“Boat and marine manufacturing require specialized and experienced workers, and White River Marine knows our state can deliver the people they need to successfully expand their business in New Bern,” Cooper said.
Foxy's School Of Music?
If you're heading for Foxy's Tamarind Bar on Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, you may not find Foxy himself. That's because Foxy (Foxy Callwood ) is spending a lot of his time at his music school down the road behind the restaurant, helping kids from the islands.
Foxy's has become an institution of almost folklore proportions ever since it opened on the beach in Great Harbour in 1968, a destination for cruisers and charter-boat customers from all around the world. (If you don't have your own boat, you can take the ferry from West End, Tortola, across the way.) The food is good, the drinks and the bar are spectacular, and Foxy is known to hold court at any given time, entertaining guests and playing his guitar.
If you don't have a good time at Foxy's, well, there might not be much hope. The bar opens at 9 a.m. and the restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily. In season, there's live entertainment after dinner and as Foxy's says on its website, "the bar stays open until the party is done." On Friday and Saturday nights, Foxy's holds a barbeque on the beach.

Ken Gebhart Passes at 85
Ken Gebhart was a good friend and supporter of Latitudes & attitudes since its start. In fact, he sold Publisher Bob Bitchin his first sextant about 4 decades ago. Kenneth Lewis Gebhart of Wichita, Kansas, was born 29 October 1935 in Montclair, N.J. and passed away on 29 April 2021. Many will remember him as a long-time sailboat show exhibitor of sextants, and presenter of seminars on celestial navigation. The company he founded in 1972, Celestaire, Inc., rose to become the largest distributor of marine sextants and related publications in the world.
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958, he went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Physics from the University of Louisville. He will be sorely missed at the boat shows, and by his friends all over the world! His son will be taking over the business and continuing his legacy!
Bob Bitchin's Books Continue the Rollout!
The California Bear Fire burned the offices of Latitudes & Attitudes to the ground, along with publishers Bob & Jody's home for the past 10 years. There was nothing left unburned.
So, the complete inventory of Bob Bitchin's books, all nine titles, were destroyed.
We've decided that we will reprint every one of them, but they will only be made available as high-quality, hardcover, collector editions signed by the author.
Emerald Bay ~ Pre-order your signed copy NOW!
Emerald Bay, a Treb Lincoln Novel, finds Treb and his friends trying to find out what happened when a boat exploded in Emerald Bay, killing his wife and almost killing Rom, his best friend. The adventure takes you into the underground lifestyle of outlaw bikers as they head to Central America to find those responsible. A look into the drug cartels in the 70s and 80s, and how one small group was able to bring them to justice. Always action packed and never boring, this is the second book released in the Treb Lincoln series, originally released in 2002, and reprinted in 2003, this new release will be the first time the book has ever been available as a hardcover, signed collector's edition.
Starboard Attitude - Now available
This will be the first time this book as been available in hardcover, and you can now place your pre-order for your signed collector's edition.
This is a collection of articles that show what it is truly like once a person has decided to cut the dock lines and sail off into the sunset. Bob has sailed over 100,000 miles, all over the world, and still manages to get out and show sailors what it’s like with his “Share The Sail” adventures in such idyllic areas as Tahiti, Croatia, Tonga, Greece, the BVIs, and Thailand.
Sitting at a waterfront bar with other sailors, you will never hear about the beauty of a day spent at anchor in safe harbor. No, the stories that rouse men’s souls always start with something going awry, and the adventure that follows as the daemons of the misadventure turn into the true spirit of the cruising lifestyle; living a little more each time the tale is told. Order your copy now!

BIKER TO SAILOR - Now Available. Biker to Sailor, is now available at bobbitchin.com for $24.95. It tells the story of how this 300-pound, tattooed outlaw transformed into a world sailor, and changed his life, and thousands of others as well. Here's what has been said about this book:
“I always wondered how a tattoo-covered, bigger than life, irrepressible biker-dude decided to take up sailing and went on to start his very own cruising magazine. In his own inimitable way, Bob has filled in the blanks, telling an only in America tale.” Lin Pardey, voyager, author
“A larger-than-life storyteller does it again. Here is another book illustrating how we get just one shot at this thing called life and how possible it is to switch gears and experience radically different lifestyles, given the will to try, the desire to succeed. Bob practices what he preaches and writes about—not dreaming the life, but living the dream—and inspires by his example.” Tania Aebi, Author, World Class Sailor
“The Bitchin’ One does it again, proving that even longhaired, tattooed, bike-booted wild cards can become… well, not 'yachtsmen,' but serious bluewater sailors. How he did it himself is quite a tale!” Sally Erdle, Caribbean Compass magazine

A Brotherhood of Outlaws - Now Available Originally written over 40 years ago, describing the outlaw motorcycle culture of the 1960s, 70s and 80s has gone to print and starts to ship about February 15th. This book is the first of the Treb Lincoln Adventure Novels.
A Brotherhood Of Outlaws takes Zen & The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance to dangerous levels. Life among the outlaw tribes... Hilarious, warm and chilling. The most honest book to come out about the outlaws motorcycle underground of America. You won’t be able to put it down until you read it all.” - Biker Magazine
“More truthful and relevant than Hunter Thompson’s Hells Angels. Not for the squeamish reader. A fast-moving first novel with a surprise on every page. Not boring!” - Cycle News
“An insight into what the real world of the outlaw biker was like. The freedom, the feeling of brotherhood, and the way of life exposed to the outside world by one who has lived it. It makes you want to take to the streets.“ - Chopper Magazine
