Why We Cruise
Ray Muzyka has been sending us some great photos, and the cruising lifestyle is so alive in this shot we had to run it. Not sure where he took this pic, but I know I'd sure like to be hanging out there, downing a sunset drink at a shoreline cafe! There is no other lifestyle that can take you to such great places, while never leaving home. Life on a boat ROCKS!
Did I Do That?
Fixing a $6 million racing yacht after crashing onto a reef at 22 miles per hour is a bit more complicated than repairing your car after a fender bender. First of all, when you're stuck on a remote archipelago in the Indian Ocean, it's hard to get anything done. And when your boat was specially designed and built by four companies in four different countries, coordinating a repair job isn't exactly like calling AAA.
It’s been awhile since a Danish sailing team crashed onto a reef off Mauritius in the early stages of the Volvo Ocean Race, a 35,000-mile, around-the-world contest. The nine crew members of Team Vestas Wind were all rescued without injury, but their 65-foot racing yacht wasn’t so lucky. The 22 mph crash broke both its rudders, and days of being banged against rocks by the current have left a gaping hole in the stern. From Wired Magazine
Is It Still Called Cruising?
On May 30, Cyril Derramaux will leave from Sausalito, CA, beginning a grueling endeavor that has yet to be completed by a solo kayaker. The unsupported mission will take between 60-70 days, and if completed in under 64 days, will earn Cyril a Guinness World Record.
The Journey
  • 2,400 nautical mile trip across the Pacific Ocean from Sausalito, CA, to Honolulu, HI
  • Expected to take 60-70 days (64 days will make it a world record)
  • Grueling solo mission (completely unsupported)

Croatia Sail Now Set for May 2022
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Croatia Share The Sail has been cancelled and rescheduled twice, and this is the FINAL Change (We hope!). The pandemic said we couldn't do it on the original date, May 2020, so we re-set it to May 2021. but once again, too much Covid going around. It was rescheduled for 2021 and now for 2022. Dates are May 14 through the 21st. Leaving out of Trogir, Which is close to Split, Croatia. . The event was sold out, but there are some who cannot make the new dates -- so there will be some berths available. There may only be a few. If interested, email Jody and we will see what cabins we have.

NOW OPEN for reservations!
A $300 deposit holds your space!
Reservations must be made directly through the ship company.
We are setting up a real adventure. The date? Set for March 8-12, 2022. No, not on small sailboats. We have reserved 20 cabins on a 100-cabin, small adventure cruising boat. It will be a four-day cruise starting in Punta Arenas, Chile, through the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Pass.
We will land on glaciers, go ashore with penguins, and then "Round the Horn"! This has been on our bucket list for years. Also, we are planning on including an additional few days with a land tour as well, since we're gonna be down there anyway, right?
Side Trip Through Tierra del Fuego National Park
The cost for the land portion will be approximately $500 including transport, meals and hotels. (This is an estimate until we can re-confirm rates after the hotels re-open!)
An optional "land-portion" will include a bus from Ushuaia, Argentina, where we finish the voyage, through the Tierra del Fuego National Park, and then back to Punta Arenas, Chile. Due to the Covid pandemic we are unable to finalize these plans, but as soon as we can verify the details, we will get them to you! It will be a 2-3 day event, and the cost cover hotels, transportation & Meals.
When the final plans for the side trip are confirmed, you can reserve your spot directly with us. All we need is a $50 deposit, so be sure to send Jody your email address so we can keep you updated as this comes closer to fruition. You can email jody@LatsAtts.com.
New Record?
Italian Skipper Giovanni Soldini and his tireless crew of eight sailors obliterated the record for sailing the "Golden Route" from New York to San Francisco, shaving a full 10 days off the previous record around the tip of South America.
The crew pulled into San Francisco Bay aboard the VOR70 Maserati on Saturday, precisely 47 days and 42 minutes after leaving New York and sailing around Cape Horn, following a challenging 13,225-mile route made popular during the Gold Rush — hence the name. The crew easily eclipsed the record set in 1998 by Yves Parlier when Aquitaine Innovations made the journey in 57 days and 3 hours.
The monohull VOR70 is a far higher performer than the previous record holder. It is a Volvo 70 monohull, the fastest of its type, with a carbon-fiber honeycomb construction. These babies go for about $4 million new. The boat was optimized for high winds to make the fastest time. She's 70 feet long and 20 feet wide, with a mast 105 feet tall and an 18-foot keel. It sports a canting keel that pivots out of the hull to more effectively counterbalance the sails. This technology, developed in the past 10 years or so, allows for greater speed by adding power and stabilizing the boat. The sails are of Kevlar, the same stuff you find in soldiers' body armor. France Announces Process To Allow
Entry To Cruisers At Any Port
Since leaving the EU, boats arriving in France from the UK or Channel Islands are required to sail to one of a small number of "Ports of Entry" (mainly the ferry ports) and search out the relevant authorities - usually the Police aux Frontières - to register the arrival of their boat and crew.
This same process of going through a Port of Entry would also be necessary before departing France for the UK or Channel Islands (or indeed any non-Schengen country), presenting CA members, and other sailors coming from the UK to France, with a potential problem for many passages.
Bob Bitchin's Books Continue the Rollout!
The California Bear Fire burned the offices of Latitudes & Attitudes to the ground, along with publishers Bob & Jody's home for the past 10 years. There was nothing left unburned.
So, the complete inventory of Bob Bitchin's books, all nine titles, were destroyed.
We've decided that we will reprint every one of them, but they will only be made available as high-quality, hardcover, collector editions signed by the author.

Emerald Bay, a Treb Lincoln Novel, finds Treb and his friends trying to find out what happened when a boat exploded in Emerald Bay, killing his wife and almost killing Rom, his best friend. The adventure takes you into the underground lifestyle of outlaw bikers as they head to Central America to find those responsible. A look into the drug cartels in the 70s and 80s, and how one small group was able to bring them to justice. Always action packed and never boring. This is the second book released in the Treb Lincoln series, originally released in 2002, and reprinted in 2003, this new release will be the first time the book has ever been available as a hardcover, signed collector's edition.
Starboard Attitude - Now available
This will be the first time this book as been available in hardcover, and you can now place your pre-order for your signed collector's edition.
This is a collection of articles that show what it is truly like once a person has decided to cut the dock lines and sail off into the sunset. Bob has sailed over 100,000 miles, all over the world, and still manages to get out and show sailors what it’s like with his “Share The Sail” adventures in such idyllic areas as Tahiti, Croatia, Tonga, Greece, the BVIs, and Thailand.
Sitting at a waterfront bar with other sailors, you will never hear about the beauty of a day spent at anchor in safe harbor. No, the stories that rouse men’s souls always start with something going awry, and the adventure that follows as the daemons of the misadventure turn into the true spirit of the cruising lifestyle; living a little more each time the tale is told. Order your copy now!

BIKER TO SAILOR - Now Available. Biker to Sailor, is now available at bobbitchin.com for $24.95. It tells the story of how this 300-pound, tattooed outlaw transformed into a world sailor, and changed his life, and thousands of others as well. Here's what has been said about this book:
“I always wondered how a tattoo-covered, bigger than life, irrepressible biker-dude decided to take up sailing and went on to start his very own cruising magazine. In his own inimitable way, Bob has filled in the blanks, telling an only in America tale.” Lin Pardey, voyager, author
“A larger-than-life storyteller does it again. Here is another book illustrating how we get just one shot at this thing called life and how possible it is to switch gears and experience radically different lifestyles, given the will to try, the desire to succeed. Bob practices what he preaches and writes about—not dreaming the life, but living the dream—and inspires by his example.” Tania Aebi, Author, World Class Sailor
“The Bitchin’ One does it again, proving that even longhaired, tattooed, bike-booted wild cards can become… well, not 'yachtsmen,' but serious bluewater sailors. How he did it himself is quite a tale!” Sally Erdle, Caribbean Compass magazine

A Brotherhood of Outlaws - Now Available Originally written over 40 years ago, describing the outlaw motorcycle culture of the 1960s, 70s and 80s has gone to print and starts to ship about February 15th. This book is the first of the Treb Lincoln Adventure Novels.
“A Brotherhood Of Outlaws takes Zen & The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance to dangerous levels. Life among the outlaw tribes... Hilarious, warm and chilling. The most honest book to come out about the outlaws motorcycle underground of America. You won’t be able to put it down until you read it all.” - Biker Magazine
“More truthful and relevant than Hunter Thompson’s Hells Angels. Not for the squeamish reader. A fast-moving first novel with a surprise on every page. Not boring!” - Cycle News
“An insight into what the real world of the outlaw biker was like. The freedom, the feeling of brotherhood, and the way of life exposed to the outside world by one who has lived it. It makes you want to take to the streets.“ - Chopper Magazine
