Laudato Si

The death of Pope Francis has hit me hard this week. I never met him, and I’m obviously not a member of his flock, yet his death feels like a personal loss. Since his election as pope in 2013, I’ve paid careful attention to his words and witness, and experienced him as a source of great inspiration. In recent years, as the moral foundations of American Christianity erode, I’ve been encouraged by Francis’ witness to the gospel, and in particular his unflinching commitment to compassion and mercy. He always put the poor and vulnerable first, and used his influence to call the nations of the world to care for those they would much prefer to overlook, most notably refugees and migrants.
It’s strange to identify the head of a church of 1.3 billion people as “prophetic” – prophets typically resist the majority culture, not serve as its leader – but that’s what made Francis so significant. He has been a virtuous voice on the shoulder of the world, reminding us what is good and right, even as other voices have sat on the other shoulder, tempting us toward very different paths. Sadly, as one commentator put it this week, his voice has been “more applauded than followed.”
Nowhere is that more true than with regard to Francis’ teaching on the environment. In 2015 he published an encyclical titled Laudato Si. The title comes from his namesake...

| | In February we informed you of the death of long time and beloved parishioner, Nora Henson. At that time arrangements were incomplete. We are now able to share with you that a Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated for Nora, Saturday, May 10 at 1:00pm. We are pleased to share that through your generosity the loose plate offering collected at our four Easter services yielded $10,000. This money will be divided equally and given to Gateway of Grace and Austin Street Center to support refugee families and those experiencing homelessness in Dallas.
Our Good Friday loose plate offering of $3,100 will be donated to the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East, providing vital support to our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land.

Walk for World Peace
Walk the Fig labyrinth for peace on May 3. Every year since 2009, on the first Saturday in May, thousands of people around the globe participate in World Labyrinth Day as a moving meditation for world peace. Many “Walk as One at 1” (1:00 pm local time) to create a rolling wave of prayer and peace, passing from one time zone to the next. This year, Transfiguration will participate by hosting a labyrinth walk with music. Begin gathering around the labyrinth at 12:30. We will offer a brief introduction before we begin.

Blessing Our New Gardens
Join us on Saturday, May 3, following The Table at 5:30pm, for a blessing ceremony of our beautiful new gardens. In the last year, we’ve made major improvements to the bell tower area, including a new courtyard with a gorgeous new water feature, new teak seating, and three garden areas filled with native plants. A dinner will follow on the courtyard.

Figs with Kids invites families with small children to join us for breakfast in the Parlor next Sunday, May 4 at 8:00am before the 9:00am Holy Eucharist. We will have light treats and feel free to bring a dish to share. This is a great opportunity if you are new to Transfiguration or simply wish to expand your circle of friends.

Transfigured Nights
Fifteenth Anniversary Recital
Sunday, May 4 at 7:00pm, Transfigured Nights proudly presents Daryl Robinson in his debut recital on the Jerry D. Godwin Organ, Richards, Fowkes & Co.’s Opus 17. This concert will inaugurate the Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration of our world-class instrument. Mr. Robinson is winner of both First Prize and Audience Prize in the 2012 American Guild of Organists National Competition and serves as Associate Professor of Organ and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. A reception will follow in the Parlor.

National Day of Prayer Invitation

This year marks the Forty-Fourth Anniversary Luncheon which will be held at the Meyerson Symphony Center in downtown Dallas. Young Adults Kick Off Meeting
Fr. Ted & Mikey will host the Young Adults’ 2025 Kick Off Event at their home on Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 6:30pm - 9:00pm. Join us for the opportunity to get to know each other and share snacks and drinks. We will also discuss our upcoming events and goals for this ministry. The Fig Young Adults fellowship is for those in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who seek to deepen their community involvement and engage in doing the work Christ has given us to do.

Together We Dine
The Fig is excited to once again partner with Project Unity in hosting Together We Dine community event on Tuesday, May 6 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm in Roper Hall. Anyone 18 years and older may participate. Individual registration is required, and space is limited. The deadline to sign-up is May 2 by 5:00pm.
Project Unity's Together We Dine provides an opportunity for people to convene and have safe conversations about race over a meal. This unique experience allows for participants to reflect on their life journey and its impact on their thoughts, biases and opinions on matters regarding race relations and social justice. Project Unity recognizes we all come from different places, backgrounds and corners of the country, but we are all bonded by the common thread of humanity.

Volunteer for The Ramp Project
The Dallas Ramp Project is calling for volunteers for Saturday, May 10 at 7:30am. Help us build ADA-compliant ramps for low-income elderly and disabled individuals with the local chapter of the Texas Ramp Project at Texas Ramp Warehouse. No experience required. Must be 16 or older to participate. We have 12 slots that are filling up fast so sign-up now to secure a spot. Sign-up closes the Monday before the event. When registering, be sure to select the correct date.

Help St. Philip's Mothers Day Store
We are supporting the revamped St. Philip's Mother's Day Store by helping the children color and create Mother's Day cards. We need 4 volunteers Saturday, May 10 at St. Philip's School and Community Center at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in South Dallas. Moms will come for yoga and cooking classes and each will receive a flower and a one-of-a-kind Happy Mother's Day card created by her kids! Let us know that you want to volunteer or if you have questions.

The Episcopal Men's Fellowship famous fish fry and silent auction will be held Sunday June 1! If you have any items you can donate to the auction, please contact Jim Kirkman (972-814-6742). Consider Becoming a Daughter
Are you called to join the order of the Daughters of the King? Beginning June 8 we will help you explore that possible calling. An 11-week discernment class is being formed for the Order of the Daughters of the King (DoK). The Daughters are a group of Christian women who adopt a Rule of Life based on the promises of our Baptismal Covenant and all women who are communicants in the Episcopal Church are being invited to join the classes. No special spiritual attributes are needed – only a sincere desire to draw nearer to God and to help others do the same. Let us know if you have any questions about the class or about the DoK.

Mark your calendars and make your plans for this summer's Vacation Bible School June 2 - 6, 2025. This year only a half-day option will be offered.
Our theme will be a Road Trip VBS, based on Joshua 1:9. Join us in a fun-filled adventure on the open road, taking all the kids (Travelers) on thrilling journeys to exciting destinations. Led by the Navigator and an adventurous pup named Scout, kids will learn that God is always with them.
We are looking for participants and for volunteers who will help facilitate our intrepid Travelers on their Road Trip. Sign-up today!

The Clothes
Horse
Working at the Clothes Horse gives the opportunity to meet new friends, work to sustain grants to support ministries outside the church and inside the church. All donated clothes are either sold or given to the Transfiguration Food Bank, Austin Street Shelter, New Friends New Life, and many other groups in need of clothing.
Our hours are 10am - 2pm:
