Small Business owner and cosmetologist Nomeka Tyson is the owner of Meka's Braids and Styles located in Biscoe. She offers services such as braiding, hair weaving, extensions, blowouts, relaxers, color and haircuts.
Meka as she is known to most, says her motivation to own her own business came from a long line of hair stylist and barbers in her family. She said, “I remember from a young age maybe, 8 years old whenever I started pressing, curling and eventually applying extensions to my grandmother's hair. My grandmother and I use to spend day trips on the weekends at the beauty supply store, just looking through all the fascinating new hair textures and colors and products!”
She continues to find her motivation for her business by the smiles and just the thought of making life a little bit easier for her clients even if it is just shampooing and blow-drying their hair every couple weeks. “That is why I do this for all my clients. I feel the feeling of accomplishment, gratitude, and thank God I was blessed with such a gift that seems so simple to me but can change the hearts of some if only for a minute”, says Tyson.
She opened her business Meka’s Braids and Styles out of her own home in 2007 and later opened a store front in Biscoe. Meka has taken numerous business courses, in person and online that has given her the business knowledge to keep her business running smoothly. “The SBC has been and continues to be a great resource for me and my business”, said Tyson." Her business continues to grow and will open this Fall in an expanded facility in Biscoe to service her over 200 clients. The new location will include a retail side to promote beauty supply products.
