Launching and Celebrating the 2025

10th Annual Global ONE HEALTH DAY

Officially celebrated November 3 each year

And

Announcing the 2024 One Health Day

STUDENT EVENTS Competition Winner

Created in 2016, 2025 marks the 10th annual global One Health Day that has provided an opportunity for organizations, groups and individuals around the world to hold hundreds of events raising awareness about One Health* and the complex challenges it addresses at the interface of animals, plants, humans and the environment. This special day gives One Health advocates and practitioners around the world a powerful voice for moving beyond provincial approaches to emerging zoonotic infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, environmental pollution, food safety, comparative research and translational medicine and many other challenges, towards a holistic, One Health, way of thinking, acting and decision making for the benefit of All.

Just as no one person, profession or discipline owns One Health, No One Organization 'owns' One Health Day. It belongs to the international One Health movement and community. It was spearheaded in 2016 and continues to be hosted by the One Health Commission in promotional partnership with the One Health Initiative Autonomous pro bono Team and the Global One Health Community.

Event Descriptions and Maps provide impressive examples of how the world is embracing and advocating for One Health with over 1100 events registered around the globe in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. And we know there have been many more such events at local, national and regional levels that did not get registered and added to the maps.

Anyone, from academic, government or corporate organizations to private individuals and groups, can plan, implement and Register one or more One Health Day events each year. These events do not have to fall right on 3 November but can occur any time of the year. Online registration to get a pin on the global One Health Day map each year is free and free use of the One Health Day fliers and logos in many languages is encouraged. Let us know (ohc@onehealthcommission.org) if you would like to help prepare a One Health Day Logo in 'your' preferred language and Remember!! to Register your event(s) to get on the map!!!

This message is a One Health Day 2025, 10th Anniversary ‘Call to Action’ encouraging more events than ever to be brought forward this year. And, once again, in 2025 there will be one Student Event cash award of $1,000. (See the One Health Day Student Competition webpage.)

And Now, A Drum Roll Please!!!!!

Announcing the Winner of the 2024

One Health Day STUDENT EVENTS Competition

with the event titled

One Health Day: Exploring Outbreak Education

A project led by High School Students at West Career & Technical Academy (WCTA) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

(Their Summary Package is quite large so you will need to download it from Google Drive to view it.

Don't miss it!!! )

Each year students are encouraged to form One Health teams with colleagues from different disciplines to envision, plan and implement One Health Day events and, if desired, to enter them into an annual student events competitionThe exceptional quality of student events submitted in 2024 made the judges' job this time quite difficult.

Proudly, for the first time ever, the 2024 One Health Day Student Event Competition Award goes to a High School student group that led a whole mini-conference. In collaboration with their High School administration (for use of the high school building and technology) and in partnership with the non-profit organization Operation Outbreak, this event was designed to reach the general 'public' including local policy makers.

This team of eleven high school students from 4 different disciplines met all the competition criteria and received the highest evaluation score. The $1,000 Cash Award will be provided by the One Health Commission.

Honorable Mention

Though no additional cash award is available, the Judges and One Health Day Coordinating team would like to also highlight another powerful Student One Health Day 2024 Event led by a six-student team from the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna titled:

One Planet – One Health: la salute non ha confini

(health has no boundaries)

Congratulations to these amazing TEAMS and all the student teams leading One Health events!!

*About One Health

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview.

The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional  organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept
