Launching the Judy Simmons Memorial Scholarship

Now accepting applications for the 2025 academic year

by Glen Herbert

"Talent is universal, but opportunity is not.

Education is a way to fix that."

Nicholas Kristof

We were exceptionlly proud to announce the annual Judy Simmons Memorial Scholarship created in memory of a community advocate whose passion for learning and commitment to youth development left a lasting impact.

This scholarship is awarded to promising students who demonstrate academic potential, community involvement, and a dedication to personal growth—qualities that Judy Simmons both embodied and inspired in others.

The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial support and encouragement to students as they pursue post-secondary education within the CARICOM region, helping to break down barriers and open doors to brighter futures. It will be awarded to two students each year to cover the cost of tuition at university or college programs.

Applications are now open to eligible students, and the online application can be found here.

We ask you to share this opportunity widely and help us continue Judy’s legacy

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me at glen.herbert@grenadinesinitiative.org with any questions about this scholarship, or how you can help spread the word to deserving candidates.

Acts of support and the strength they uncover

Building community capacity

by Glen Herbert

I believe it's true that we all perform better when we know that others believe in us. We try harder, and we risk more, when we know that there is someone behind us, aware of our skills and talents, and who wants to see us succeed.

I think that is the concept that is at the core of all that we do within the Grenadines Initiative. Whether helping with food security, contributing to the Hummingbird music recital, delivering scholarships. It could be helping someone get glasses, which we did recently, which is one of the most rewarding things I think anyone can do. It could be delivering building supplies to help rebuild after the storm, which I did recently with Ringo from Caribbean Woods.

The work we do is many things. But, in all cases, I hope, for those who benefit, it’s not just food, or supplies, or financial assistance. I hope it’s also a reminder that there is a community behind them, one that believes in them and wants to see them succeed.

A young woman recently approached me for a bit of help, this for access to a school program, and she ended one email saying that she hopes we’ll take pity on her and help. I told her that we’re not helping her out of pity. We’re helping her because of her gifts and her ambition. We help people not because they are weak, but because they are strong.

There is tremendous capacity in the people of this island. Talent, caring, knowledge, skill. Removing barriers, when we can, and whatever they might be, is an opportunity to tap into that capacity.
