I believe it's true that we all perform better when we know that others believe in us. We try harder, and we risk more, when we know that there is someone behind us, aware of our skills and talents, and who wants to see us succeed.
I think that is the concept that is at the core of all that we do within the Grenadines Initiative. Whether helping with food security, contributing to the Hummingbird music recital, delivering scholarships. It could be helping someone get glasses, which we did recently, which is one of the most rewarding things I think anyone can do. It could be delivering building supplies to help rebuild after the storm, which I did recently with Ringo from Caribbean Woods.
The work we do is many things. But, in all cases, I hope, for those who benefit, it’s not just food, or supplies, or financial assistance. I hope it’s also a reminder that there is a community behind them, one that believes in them and wants to see them succeed.
A young woman recently approached me for a bit of help, this for access to a school program, and she ended one email saying that she hopes we’ll take pity on her and help. I told her that we’re not helping her out of pity. We’re helping her because of her gifts and her ambition. We help people not because they are weak, but because they are strong.
There is tremendous capacity in the people of this island. Talent, caring, knowledge, skill. Removing barriers, when we can, and whatever they might be, is an opportunity to tap into that capacity.
