In Memoriam:
Marciano "Mark" Vega Pangilinan
1994 Guam Business Hall of Fame Laureate
The Guam Chamber of Commerce joins the island and the Pangilinan family in mourning the passing of Marciano "Mark" Vega Pangilinan, a prolific visionary of Guam's business community and a 1994 Guam Business Hall of Fame Laureate.
Arriving on Guam at just 19 years old with little more than a $5,000 loan and an immigrant's determination, Mark Pangilinan built a single Haberdashery shop into M.V. Pangilinan Enterprises, Inc., a conglomerate spanning retail, publishing, automotive, and insurance that grew into one of Guam's ten largest corporations. He was the first Filipino-Guamanian to own a multi-million dollar enterprise, and the many storefronts he founded - from Mark's Department Store and Ace Hardware to the Guam Tribune and Yigo Amusement Park & Shopping Center - became fixtures of island life for Guam residents.
Laureate Pangilinan's legacy extended well beyond commerce. He served as Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Guam, Chairman of the Board of Guam Power Authority, Campaign Chairman of the Guam Chapter of the American Red Cross, and Board Member of the Guam Chamber of Commerce, among many other civic roles. He was a longtime pillar and Adviser Emeritus of the Filipino Community of Guam. His generosity, corporate and personal, touched countless charities and community initiatives across the island.
His achievements were recognized far beyond Guam's shores, including an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Guam, the Philippine government's Most Outstanding Filipino Overseas award, and the Pro-Ecclesia Pontificae honor bestowed by Pope Paul VI. On November 9, 1991, Guam proclaimed Mark V. Pangilinan Day in recognition of his contributions to the island he called home.
Laurete Pangilinan's life exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit, civic devotion, and generosity that the Guam Business Hall of Fame was created to honor. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of business leaders on Guam.
Inaabot namin ang aming taos-pusong pakikiramay sa pamilya.
Rest in Peace, Sir. Despidida estaki manali’e’ hit ta’lo.

The Fight for Free Enterprise Is Playing Out in Your Backyard
When government control grows, Americans will pay the price
There is a growing anti-free enterprise movement, and it is showing up in races across the country. U.S. Chamber President and CEO Suzanne Clark says the stakes could not be higher.
Why it matters: Redistribution, government control, and protectionism result in scarcity, not abundance. Businesses face more red tape. Workers see fewer opportunities. Families pay more for less.
Big picture: Free enterprise is the belief that when people are free to compete, innovate, and take risks, communities grow, wages rise, and opportunity expands. That idea is now being tested.
What they said: "The thing about veering off course is frequently not just a sharp turn—it could be a series of small steps in the wrong direction,” Clark said. “We've got to choose to stay on this path of growth and opportunity."
Free enterprise isn't perfect—but it is the system best equipped to solve today's challenges and create tomorrow's opportunities. “It's the best at getting better. It's the system that enables businesses to respond to people, to respond to problems,” Clark added.
