Junior Mentor Wins Congressional App Challenge Congratulations to Junior Mentor Lavanya Goel on winning Rep. Ayanna Pressley's Congressional App Challenge! Lavanya, along with two Prospect Hill Academy peers, developed Opportune, an app to help students locate after school activities and get involved in their community. We're thrilled to honor Catalyst Awardees Kaelyn Brown and Ashley Cooper —both Harvard Neuroscience students—and Silver Anniversary Awards recipients, Cambridge STEAM Initiative, Geeta Pradhan of the Cambridge Community Foundation, and the Women's Foundation of Boston , for their leadership building a more diverse and inclusive STEM community. Thank you to everyone who made a donation as part of our end-of-year giving campaign—and to all of you who gave your time, talent, and treasure in 2019. Our fall semester was full of exciting growth. We re-established clubs at Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester and welcomed 3 new sites: O'Neill Public Library Branch in Cambridge, East Somerville Community School, and the Elizabeth Peabody House in Somerville . We recruited a record number of mentors (45%) with racial identities underrepresented in STEM, low-income backgrounds, or who are first in their family to go to college. This school year, SCFG will provide over 5,200 hours of engaging STEM programming, leadership opportunities, and mentorship to more than 250 girls in grades K - 12. You make this possible! We're so excited to kick off our Spring semester in just a couple weeks, and we couldn't do it without our mentors, supporters, board, and of course, YOU!

Mentor of the Month: Sedrah Mashhour Sedrah is excited to begin her first semester as a mentor with Science Club for Girls. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Bunker Hill Community College. In high school, Sedrah provided STEM tutoring through the Science National Honors Society and has appeared as a guest speaker at the Harvard Medical School Health Professions and Recruitment Exposure Program, where she discussed being a woman from a low-income minority background in academics, and overcoming imposter syndrome. Sedrah shares: "Science Club for Girls offers a lifetime opportunity for girls to break the cyclical generational mentality of sex bias in higher education. Because of this program, the girls are able to deduce early-on that their presence in STEM is valid, respectable, and achievable. I want to be part of the journey where girls realize their limitless potential and apply their intellect to their community and world." We are so happy to have mentors like Sedrah involved in our programming this semester!

About Science Club for Girls SCFG fosters excitement, confidence and literacy in science, technology, engineering and mathematics for girls from underrepresented communities by providing free, experiential programs. With women making up less than 24 percent of the STEM workforce—and black and Hispanic women at less than four percent—SCFG addresses a critical need, offering a continuum of engaging activities in STEM for K-8 girls, leadership experiences for high school girls, and adult mentoring by committed women in STEM.
