Greetings!
At an initial consultation, I always make clear that lawsuits take time. The time it takes to get a date for trial after all discovery has been complete is approximately 11 months in New York Supreme Court. If you think that's long, I'm glad that I don't practice criminal law in the Bronx. The New York Times is running an excellent expose this week on the problems of the Bronx court system. The delays in the Bronx court system are apparent even before entering the criminal courts building. Victims, defendants, witnesses and relatives often face long lines to go through security. It can take years to get a trial date, which certainly is a problem if you are innocent. It is less of a problem if you committed the crime as by the time trial comes around, witnesses could be missing, evidence lost. This problem is huge. Do you think we should invest more money into the legal system so that cases can move faster?
I'm very passionate about Immigration Reform and its potential to increase the level of innovation in America. And its great to see everyone from Mark Zuckerberg to Laurene Jobs taking the initiative to help get the message out. Check out the March for Innovation site to learn more and get involved. There are a few networking events coming up that you should attend. On April 17, 2013 the Food+Tech Happy Hour & Networking will take place at Tom & Jerrys, 288 Elizabeth St in Manhattan. Register for free here. On April 25, 2013 the largest free tech event in the world (at least that is what the organizers claim) is coming to New York City. NY Tech Day is happening at Pier 92. You can register here. Let me know if you are planning to attend so that we can meetup.
And finally, I'll leave you with a couple of annual letters to shareholders - one by Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffet (where he encourages other CEOs to be less cautious and less nervous) and the other by Amazon's Jeff Bezos (where he talks about eschewing short-term profits to maximize long-term customer loyalty and product opportunities).
Have a great week and let me know how I can help you or anyone else you know. Simply hit reply.
Best,
