Bonnen releases House committee assignments
House Speaker Dennis Bonnen released committee chairmanships and assignments this week. As expected, Rep. Dan Huberty returns to lead the Public Education Committee, which has a few new faces this session. Rep. Jim Murphy will chair the Pensions and Financial Services Committee, and Rep. John Zerwas will chair the Appropriations Committee.

Behind-the-scenes drama unfolded in the Texas Senate this week as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick stripped Sen. Kel Seliger of his committee chairmanship.

Bills continue to be filed as legislators get down to business, and some hearings will begin in the House next week. Along with funding, school safety is a hot topic this session. We've got summaries of several safety bills filed so far.
