This week, the Idaho Department of Correction called off the execution of Thomas Creech after medical team members could not establish an IV line for the lethal injection. Roland Beres of KIVI and Scott McIntosh of the Idaho Statesman share their accounts as media witnesses for the state. Sara Omundson, Administrative Director of the Courts, discusses how the Idaho Supreme Court is addressing cybersecurity concerns. Finally, Kevin Richert of Idaho Education News goes over the latest moves from lawmakers on the University of Phoenix purchase.

House committee questions IDOC Director Josh Tewalt after failed lethal injection execution

Tewalt explained that the state is only allowed to access a peripheral vein, often in the hands and arms, rather than a central vein as used in emergency medical situations.


Lawmakers also asked about using the firing squad as a backup execution method, and whether progress has been made on constructing a firing squad site at the state prison.

Senate votes down first anti-SLAPP proposal

The Idaho Senate in a 15-20 vote Thursday rejected a bill that sought to create a new court process for strategic lawsuits against public participation, or SLAPP suits. Several senators expressed support for the concept but were unsure about how crafting a new legal motion for the courtroom would affect existing judicial rules.

Branden Durst files intent to sue State Board and Department of Education for $1.25 million

In a tort claim filed with the Secretary of State’s office Wednesday, Durst alleged that the State Board of Education’s decision to deny him an emergency certificate to serve as superintendent of the West Bonner School District “resulted in his loss of employment.”

Two bills introduced on foster care system changes 

Sen. Abby Lee, who chairs the Child Protection Legislative Oversight Committee, sponsored both foster system bills. The first would regulate the age of children in foster care who are allowed to be housed in temporary housing when a foster family is unavailable. The second would create an ombudsman office to monitor health and social services for vulnerable adults and children in state custody.

Restaurant liquor licenses proposed for resort cities  

The bill would allow three additional liquor licenses per resort city, but they could only be used during normal business hours. The majority of the restaurant’s revenue would have to come from food, and liquor could only be served during normal food serving hours.
