"America's White Table" display at Ben Franklin Elementary School (BF)
Honor and respect were the lessons for LTPS students on  Veterans Day
Students at Lawrence Township Public Schools (LTPS) celebrated  Veterans Day and the days leading up to it by honoring veterans in several unique ways.

Elementary school students invited veterans to participate in celebrations; shared songs; created cards and artwork, including a banner to display at Applebee's (a yearly tradition for LES students); and even set up a small table in the lunchroom with a place setting to remember service members held prisoner or missing in action, as explained in the book "America's White Table."

Middle school students read about the history of Veterans Day; studied the bio of Richard Overton, the oldest veteran who lived to the age of 113; discussed the "Star-Spangled Banner" and its history during wartime, which led to discussion of Veterans Day as a commemoration of all soldiers, past and present; and participated in the "Troopons - Coupons for Troops" program during November. The 7th grade choir prepared the piece "In Flanders Fields," and will perform it at their Winter Concert.

Some high school classes discussed the origins of Veterans Day connected to WWI, showed video clips from historical programs; provided literature related to the "In Flanders's Fields" poem and the significance of poppies from that time period; and discussed how veterans today are respected in our nation.
