What's the latest on our dirt?
You may recall that in preparation for our turf project, we tested the soils and found contaminated areas on fields 1, 2, 3, and 5. The contaminated soils on fields of the Lawrence Middle School (LMS) and Lawrence High School (LHS) campus will soon be removed and playing surfaces will be re-opened. Although our consultant, after testing, told us we could have continued using the fields, we elected to close them.

Last month we cleaned up field 5 by removing the contaminated soil and subsequently reopened it. Tomorrow we will issue the contract to clean up fields 2 and 3. The work will take about 3 days to complete.  We will clean up field 1 (existing varsity baseball field) when we break ground to install turf.

Although we elected to remove the contaminated soils, we could have allowed the soils to remain in place. The areas that tested positive, or "hot," were 6" below ground and encapsulated. This means the top 6" of playing field did not test positive. The contaminants were not mobile and did not impact ground water nor did they migrate upward into the top soil.

Fields 1, 2, and 3 will remain closed until we've removed the contaminated soil.

Michele Bowes
Meet our new Board of Education member...
Michele Bowes!
Out of seven applicants who expressed a willingness to serve and interviewed with the Lawrence Board of Education (BOE), the BOE selected Michele Bowes on May 11 as its new member. Mrs. Bowes fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Glenn Collins.

Mrs. Bowes will serve until the November 2016 Board of Education elections which are held at the same time as general (for 2016, presidential) elections. At that time, she may elect to run for the one year left on the vacated term or run for one of three three-year term positions that also will be on the ballot.

Mrs. Bowes is a social worker (per diem) at St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville and is a life coach. She and her family moved to Lawrenceville in 2007. She and her husband have two children in the Lawrence Township Public Schools district...one in 4th grade and one in 6th.
