RESEARCH SUCCESSES

Where community and science meet: Lawson LEADS partnership with the community and people with lived experience.

FUNDING

Dr. Rocio Sedano, Associate Scientist at Lawson, has received $97,500 in funding from the Academic Medical Organization of Southwestern Ontario (AMOSO) over three years, for the study, “Development of a London Gastroenterology Motility Databank (The GI Motility Database)” to support the development of a London Gastroenterology Motility Databank.

This new database will collect and organize clinical motility data, creating a valuable resource to advance research in neurogastroenterology and improve understanding of digestive health disorders.

Dr. Spencer B Chambers, has been awarded $146,250 in funding over the next three years from AMOSO for the study, “Improving the management of hand fractures utilizing intramedullary screw fixation.

This research will explore innovative surgical approaches to stabilize hand fractures, with the goal of improving patient outcomes, recovery time and overall quality of care.

Why do some people develop a rare, early-onset frontotemporal dementia subtype and could a hidden DNA repeat be the clue? Researchers ran a genome-wide study and long-read sequencing, finding a GOLGA8A repeat expansion in ~60% of cases. Clinicians and dementia researchers will gain a new diagnostic target and research direction. #Aging

Can differences in lumbar vertebra shape become ‘biomarkers’ on fluoroscopy to guide pain procedures? Researchers analyzed 800+ lumbar images, measuring vertebral geometry to spot features visible during fluoroscopy. They identified a candidate landmark that may distinguish lateral neck shapes and support parallel needle placement. Interventional pain clinicians and anatomy/imaging researchers will gain clearer targeting cues.

Can pairing brain stimulation with exercise boost leg recovery after incomplete spinal cord injury? Researchers will run a pilot randomized trial combining repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation with functional electrical stimulation cycling, tracking feasibility, safety and changes in strength and walking. Rehabilitation clinicians, engineers and trialists will gain a blueprint for larger studies. #Rehabilitation

What does “recovery” from vaping mean if someone isn’t fully abstinent? Using Walker and Avant’s concept analysis and a broad literature review, researchers define vaping recovery as multifaceted, iterative and personal. This harm reduction framing can guide measurement, education and policy. Clinicians, researchers and policymakers gain language for support.

Do patients interpret orthosis-adherence checklists as intended? Researchers used think-aloud cognitive interviews with 13 adults who had worn upper-limb orthoses. Most items were clear, but terms like “customizability” and “undue strain,” plus context-dependent items, caused confusion; “affordability” often needed “not applicable.” Read if you design measures or deliver orthosis care and are interested in gaining patient-centred wording cues.

This pilot randomized crossover trial compares clinic-made orthoses with remotely designed, 3D-printed, heat-reshapable polycaprolactone devices, tracking feasibility, clinical utility and patient outcomes. They outline who benefits, what to do and how to follow up. Clinicians, trainees and implementation researchers will gain a clear, reproducible pathway.
