How can apathy in people with neurocognitive disorders be better recognized and treated? In this international white paper, experts reviewed current evidence on diagnosis, biomarkers, treatment and prevention. They found that apathy is common and has major impacts on patients and caregivers, but clinical tools and guidelines remain limited. Clinicians, dementia care teams, researchers and policymakers should read this article to understand future priorities. #MentalHealth

Can prehabilitation, rehabilitation started before surgery, better prepare patients for hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome? Researchers used the Medical Research Council framework, patient input, evidence reviews and expert consensus to develop PREHAB FAI, an eight-week program combining strengthening, mobility, balance, cardiovascular conditioning and education. This work is important because structured prehabilitation may improve preparation before surgery. Rehabilitation clinicians and surgeons should read this article. #Rehabilitation

How does shoulder anatomy vary in Japanese patients and why does that matter for surgery? Researchers used computed tomography scans to build a population-specific statistical shape model of the scapula and humerus, stratified by sex and stature. They found meaningful variation that may affect implant design, sizing and positioning. This article is important for orthopedic surgeons, engineers and researchers working in shoulder arthroplasty and surgical planning. #SurgicalSpecialties

Blissett S, Taylor TS. (2026). Rigorous qualitative research is defined by different principles than rigorous quantitative research. JACC: Advances.

What makes qualitative research rigorous and why should it not be judged by the same standards as quantitative research? In this editorial, the authors explain how qualitative research uses distinct principles to assess quality, including the credibility, depth and trustworthiness of findings. Rather than relying on measures such as sample size or statistical significance, rigorous qualitative research depends on careful study design, transparent methods and thoughtful interpretation of people’s experiences. This article is important because it helps readers better understand how qualitative evidence contributes to health research, education and clinical practice. Researchers, clinicians, educators and reviewers should read it to strengthen how they design, evaluate and apply qualitative studies.

Sanatani M, Black M, Tsvetkova E, Harris-Schulz K, Malik S, Sibbald S. (2026). "I need to find ways, and I've not yet been successful": Exploring adaptive challenges and adaptive leadership as experienced by patients with gastrointestinal malignancy. PEC Innovation.

How do patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancers navigate the complex changes that come with their illness and care? In this qualitative study, researchers interviewed patients with advanced colon or pancreatic cancer to explore whether adaptive leadership, a framework for understanding complex challenges, reflects their experiences. Participants described many adaptive challenges, including the need to adjust to uncertainty, changing roles and difficult decisions. The study found that patients responded in highly individual ways and some chose not to adapt in certain areas to maintain autonomy. This research is important because it encourages oncology teams to look beyond standard care models and better understand each patient’s unique challenges and preferences. Clinicians, researchers and care teams supporting people with cancer should read this article to learn how adaptive healthcare can help support more personalized, patient-centred care.

Eliason MC, Nagella AB, Cuadra C, Wack DS, Saleem GT, Pasternak S, Finger E, ..., Weiner M (2026). Surface-based morphometry reveals divergent aging trajectories in veterans with and without traumatic brain injury. GeroScience.

How does traumatic brain injury affect the way the brain changes with age? This study compared brain imaging from veterans with and without a history of traumatic brain injury to examine differences in cortical thickness and surface area across 34 brain regions. The researchers found that Veterans with traumatic brain injury showed different age-related patterns in brain structure than those without injury, suggesting that traumatic brain injury may alter typical brain aging trajectories. This research is important because it may help explain long-term brain health risks after injury and support earlier identification of Veterans who could benefit from monitoring or intervention. Clinicians, rehabilitation specialists, neuroscientists and researchers working in aging, brain injury and veteran health should read this article to better understand how past injury may shape brain aging over time.

Across Lawson, research is strengthened by clinical leaders like Stephanie Cornell, who help connect patient care, collaboration and evidence-informed practice to improve outcomes for patients and families.
