RESEARCH SUCCESSES

Lawson Fellow Stephanie Marrocco sparks meaningful discussion during the latest Talks on Friday session.

FUNDING

Drs. Sonja Reichert and Diana Sherifali were awarded $99,816 in funding from the Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) Alternate Funding Plan (AFP) Innovation Fund (Academic Medical Organization of Southwestern Ontario [AMOSO]) for the project “Implement LIBERATE – A mixed methods implementation study of a technologically enabled diabetes self management education program.” This award supports innovative approaches that improve health-care delivery and translate evidence into practice.

This project focuses on implementing LIBERATE, a virtual diabetes self-management education program that combines group-based education with wearable technologies, such as glucose sensors and activity trackers. Designed for people living with Type 2 diabetes, the program helps participants understand how food and physical activity affect their blood glucose in real time, supporting personalized and sustainable lifestyle changes. The study will examine how LIBERATE can be effectively integrated into real-world care settings and expanded across the health system.

Dr. Hana Serajeddini has received $64,808 in funding from the AHSC AFP Innovation Fund (AMOSO) for the “SARRE-COMS study: Sustained Asthma Remission and Reduced RElapse using a COmprehensive Management Strategy randomized control trial.” This award supports innovative physician-led research aimed at improving health-care delivery and patient outcomes.

The SARRE-COMS study is a randomized control trial focused on achieving sustained asthma remission rather than symptom control alone. Using a comprehensive, individualized management approach, the study is evaluating whether addressing multiple drivers of asthma can reduce relapse and improve long-term outcomes for patients. Findings from this work aim to inform more effective long-term asthma care models that can be integrated into clinical practice.

Dr. Rocio Sedano has received $97,500 in funding from the AHSC AFP Innovation Fund (AMOSO) for the project, “Development of a London Gastroenterology Motility Databank (The GI Motility Database) to facilitate research in the field of neurogastroenterology.” This award supports the development of innovative research infrastructure to strengthen clinical research capacity.

This project will establish a centralized database to capture and organize gastrointestinal motility testing data generated through clinical care in London. By creating a secure, research-ready platform, the BI Motility Database will support studies in neurogastroenterology and motility disorders, enable more efficient use of routinely collected data and lay the foundation for future observational studies and clinical trials. This work aims to advance understanding of GI motility disorders and improve patient care through data-driven research.

How can genetic frontotemporal dementia be detected earlier? This study asked whether brain imaging patterns could signal disease before symptoms. Researchers combined MRI scans from international families to create grey matter “fingerprints.” These patterns distinguished gene carriers from non-carriers, pointing to earlier diagnosis. Does posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) change how specific parts of the brain’s thalamus communicate with other brain networks involving sensing, movement, attention, emotions and thinking? Researchers analyzed high-resolution brain scans from a multi-site dataset of PTSD cases and controls. The examined 397 participants from six sites and found disrupted connections in key thalamic regions that shape attention, emotion and sensation. The research highlights the importance of fine-grained mapping of the thalamic system to understand the effects of PTSD. Clinicians, researchers and trainees should read on to learn more. #Imaging

How do outpatient physician visits for community-dwelling people with dementia change during COVID-19 compared with the prior year? This study examined how outpatient physician visits changed for community-dwelling older adults with dementia during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the year prior. While visits to cognitive and other specialists declined significantly during the first wave, family physician visits remained stable overall, largely due to a rapid shift to virtual care. The findings highlight the central role of primary care in maintaining dementia care during health system disruptions. Primary care physicians and health system planners will find this study provides evidence on sustaining dementia care during crises.

What evidence exists on how osteoporosis is currently identified and managed in people living with Parkinson’s disease? People living with Parkinson’s disease face a high but often overlooked risk of osteoporosis and fractures. To learn more about what is already known in the literature, the researchers conducted a scoping review and asked how osteoporosis is currently managed in Parkinson’s disease and whether existing approaches are fit for this purpose. They reviewed 18 studies and found that most guidance is borrowed from the general population, highlighting a major evidence gap and the need for Parkinson’s specific strategies. Son S, Speechley M, Zou G, Montero-Odasso M. What combinations of modifiable risk factors are most prevalent and most strongly associated with low cognition? Results from Canadian longitudinal study on aging. Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders.

Which combinations of modifiable risk factors are most common and most strongly associated with low cognition in mid-to-older adults? A large analysis of 30,097 adults in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging found that certain co-occurring, modifiable risk factors, especially hearing loss and physical inactivity, with hypertension and obesity added, were both common and strongly linked to lower cognitive performance. Notably, hypertension and physical inactivity showed a synergistic effect, underscoring the value of targeting multiple risk factors together to better protect brain health. Researchers, clinicians and policymakers interested in high-impact risk factor combinations to target dementia prevention should read this article.
