Does the apathy, gait impairment and executive dysfunction (AGED) triad predicts earlier dementia onset? To find out, researchers followed 322 older adults for up to nine years. Researchers found 5% were diagnosed with AGED triad and had five times higher risk of developing dementia than individuals without AGED triad and those with fewer AGED triad components (i.e. 1 or 2). Hypertension and diabetes were also more common in the AGED group. The AGED triad may serve as a simple marker for accelerated dementia progression potentially linked with vascular risk factors.

A systematic review of female participation in randomized controlled trials of post-stroke upper extremity rehabilitation in low- to middle-income countries and high-income countries and regions. Cerebrovascular Diseases

How many women participate in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for post-stroke upper limb rehabilitation in low- to middle-income and high-income countries was examined in this systematic review. The researchers analyzed 1,276 RCTs and found women were underrepresented everywhere with slightly higher participation in high-income countries. Female enrolment has not improved over the past two decades. These findings highlight the need for better inclusion of women in stroke rehabilitation research and are relevant to clinicians, researchers and policymakers.

This study compared the types of therapies used in randomized controlled trials for upper limb rehabilitation after stroke between high-income and low-to-middle income countries. The researchers analyzed existing trials to identify differences in rehabilitation approaches. They found notable variations in the interventions used across these settings, likely reflecting differences in resources and health care infrastructure. The findings highlight the need for context-specific rehabilitation strategies. This article is relevant for clinicians, policymakers and researchers interested in global stroke rehabilitation practices.

How do different dietary patterns affect brain health in middle-aged and older adults? The authors of this narrative review examined existing research to determine if certain diets can help maintain cognitive function and reduce the risk of dementia. They found that diets rich in essential nutrients – such as the Mediterranean, Nordic and DASH diets – support brain health by reducing inflammation and promoting neurogenesis. These findings are relevant for health care providers, policymakers and adults interested in health aging.

What challenges do women with lower-limb amputations face during pregnancy? Researchers surveyed 16 Canadian women who had been pregnant after amputation and found that many experienced increased pain, changes in limb size, reduced prosthesis comfort and needed mobility aids like wheelchairs. These findings reveal unique difficulties and highlight the need for tailored support. This study is important for women with amputations, health care providers and rehabilitation teams seeking to improve pregnancy care and outcomes.

This systematic review examined which outcome measures are used in randomized controlled trials of post-stroke upper extremity rehabilitation in low-to-middle-income and high-income countries. Analyzing 1,276 studies, the authors found significant differences in the choice of outcome measures between countries, likely influenced by available resources and expertise. The study highlights the need for standardizing outcome measures globally. Researchers, clinicians and policymakers involved in stroke rehabilitation should read this to inform best practices and future research directions.

Understanding whether people with bipolar disorder who still feel some depressive symptoms experience lower resilience – the ability to cope with stress – was explored in this study. Researchers assessed patients’ lingering depressive feelings and measured their resilience levels. They found that ongoing depressive symptoms are linked to reduced resilience in these individuals. The findings suggest that boosting resilience could help improve outcomes for bipolar patients with residual depression. Do people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) show changes in brain blood flow and oxygenation rhythms and do these changes affect how the brain uses oxygen? Using advanced imaging, the researchers of this study found that individuals with amnestic MCI had reduced low-frequency oscillations in cerebral perfusion and oxygenation, but their brain oxygen metabolism remained unchanged. These findings suggest early vascular changes in MCI, which could help identify those at risk for dementia. Clinicians and dementia researchers should read this study.

The findings highlight the need for routine anger screening in veteran care. This article is relevant for clinicians, policymakers and those working with military populations.

What are the most effective treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in military populations? In this meta-analysis, examining over 400 studies, researchers compared psychotherapy, medication and their combination. They found that while both psychotherapy and medication alone are effective, combing them leads to the greatest improvement in PTSD symptoms. These findings suggest clinical guidelines should be updated. Clinicans, policymakers and anyone involved in veteran mental health care will find this an important read.

This study explored which features of mental health and resilience training are most valued by military personnel. Using surveys with 567 Canadian Armed Forces members, researchers found that expert instructors, leadership support, practical skill practice and relevant content were most important. Less emphasis was placed on behavioral nudges or trainer-trainee similarity. The findings suggest that tailoring programs to these preferences could improve engagement and effectiveness. Military trainers, program designers and policymakers should read this article for actionable insights.
