Ms. Holly Munroe, ESE Resource Teacher
What is your educational background?
I earned my Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and my Masters degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida. This is my 12th year teaching in OCPS. My teaching career began at Avalon Elementary in 2004, where I started working with students with varying exceptionalities, then I transitioned to teach second grade and second grade gifted inclusion. In 2010, I was able to stay home and became a mom to two amazing boys. I came back to teaching and started at Lawton Chiles in 2015, where I have taught gifted resource and currently teach ESE. I truly love working with students to help them reach their goals, develop self-efficacy and become independent lifelong learners.
How/ when did you discover your passion for teaching?
I developed a passion for teaching when I was in high school. After school, I volunteered to help students at a local elementary school with Power Hour tutoring in Sarasota, FL. I enjoyed making connections with the students and giving them strategies to make learning fun.
What has been your most memorable moment in the classroom?
My most memorable moments in the classroom is when students express to me how much they love what they are doing/working on AND that they enjoy me teaching them-this is my “why” for what I do!
Anything else that you would like people to know about you (hobbies /interests)?
When I’m not teaching, you will find me either at a football, soccer or lacrosse field. These are sports that my boys play and really enjoy. I love being a mom to my two boys who are now 9 and 11 years old. When we’re not sporting, I love spending time with family and friends, shopping, vacationing and time at the beach.

The LCE Behavior Buzz
During the month of December, our PBIS focus is “Be Responsible”. Our students will practice ways they can “Be Responsible” around campus and bring those practices home and into our community!
As we reflect on this first half of this academic school year, our students have done an outstanding job modeling our monthly PBIS expected behaviors throughout campus. Students are continuing to be rewarded with ice cream parties and prestige recognition of their efforts. Congratulations to all of our students!
Our next drawing will be held after our Holiday break. We have exciting news coming with our PBIS store. We are preparing for school spirit shirts and rewards for students demonstrating our PBIS expected behavior! Stay tuned for more details!
Parents: If you capture your child using these skills at home, send in your drawings or photos! We would love to showcase them here!
December PBIS Pro Tip: “Be Responsible” – I start my day in a positive way, I think about my choices before I make them and I choose to be happy.

Lawton Chiles’ students completed i-Ready reading and math middle-of-the-year diagnostic assessments starting the week of November 30th. Reading data shows gains and growth were evident across all grade levels. More students are at or working towards reaching grade level expectations compared to the beginning-of-the-year i-Ready diagnostic tests. We are so proud of our students' efforts and hard work! Below is Lawton Chiles’ i-Ready reading data:
i-Ready reading:
|
|
|
|
Based on schoolwide i-Ready middle-of-the-year reading data, 51% of students are Tier 1 (on, mid or above grade level). This compares to the beginning-of-the-year data where 27% of students were Tier 1. That’s a 24% increase! Forty-four percent of students are Tier 2 (1-2 grade level below). That is a 3% decrease from the beginning-of-the-year data in which students were at 47%. Five percent of students are Tier 3 (3 or more grade level below). At the beginning of the year, 27% of students at Lawton Chiles were identified as Tier 3 (3 or more grade levels below)!
We are exceptionally proud of our students’ accomplishments and look forward to continued successes!
