The Lawton Ledger
2021-2022 Calendar
Important Info. - Testing
My name is Alison Roscoe and I am the Testing Coordinator. This is my 22nd year of teaching and my second year at Lawton Chiles Elementary. I have just celebrated my 15th Wedding Anniversary and I have 2 daughters and 4 dogs. Both of my girls play Lacrosse. Abigail is going into 5th Grade and Kayla is going to be a Freshman in High School. I am super excited to get the 21-22 school year going and can’t wait to see all of our amazing students. I will be providing you with important testing information and updates in each issue of the Lawton Ledger.

While I know you are waiting for them, FSA scores will be available to parents once we get the official score reports. I will update parents as soon as those come in so that you will be able to see how your child did on the assessments.

As the year begins, all students in grades K-5 will be taking the iReady Diagnostic in both reading and math. This assessment is used to guide the specific needs of the students. The window for this assessment is August 16-September 3. A more specific schedule will come out closer to the time of testing. Kindergarten will also participate in the FLKRS Kindergarten readiness assessment. This is to be completed in the first 30 days of school, and they will take it once they have completed the iReady Diagnostics.

I am looking forward to working with both the students, as well as their families. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns, [email protected].

Thank you for your time,

Alison Roscoe

WHY: Student Spotlight
Welcome he-coon parents, families, and community members! We are so excited to welcome you back to another school year here at LCE. My name is Emma Buchanan, and I am the school counselor here! I am delighted to be going into my fourth year here at Lawton, working with the best educators, students, staff, and families around.

I offer a variety of services here at LCE (see full list of support services in the graphic below). Most of my time (~80%) will be spent providing Tier 1 social-emotional support services to students – these are services provided to ALL students at LCE, PK-5th grade. Included in these services are tri-weekly classroom guidance lessons on a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, conflict resolution, coping skills, friendship skills, feelings identification, empathy, and middle school readiness. I also run a school-wide character trait PBIS system for students. This month, our character trait is positivity. Students can be awarded tickets for exhibiting this trait around our school, which they can turn in for prizes on Fridays. Student of the month lunch bunches are also based around this trait – once your child is identified as their class’s student of the month, they will come eat lunch with me, receive awards, and celebrate with students of the month from other classes.

In addition to the services listed above, I run three rounds of eight-week groups each year to meet the needs of our students. Some topics of past groups include, but are not limited to, friendship skills, resiliency, grief, anxiety, and social skills. I work closely with our behavior specialist, school psychologist, school social worker, and district mental health counselor to make sure that your children(ren) and your family receive any social, emotional, or behavior supports and services you may need. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any needs you may have, however small. You can call me at (407) 737.1470 x.357.2371 or send me an email at [email protected].

I am looking forward to another fun-filled, academically engaging year with your child(ren)!

Kindly,

Emma Buchanan

WHAT: Data & Goals
Promote and sustain community and parental engagement
  • Lawton Chiles’ main focus this year is to promote and sustain relationships with our community. We will promote and sustain our school volunteers (ADDitions), partners in education, and parent academy attendance. This will be based on mutual trust, learning, culturally responsiveness, collaboration, and interaction.

Increase learning gains for all students in all areas through the use of small group instruction
  • Lawton Chiles will provide continuous support for designing instruction to address student learning through individualized and small group differentiated instruction.

Increase student achievement in all areas by ensuring student engagement
  • Lawton Chiles will use evidence-based practices in order to actively and cognitively engage students in standards-based teaching and learning. Through professional development and coaching cycles, we will increase student engagement in classrooms.

Establish and maintain a school culture centered on social-emotional needs of our students
  • Lawton Chiles will use resources and strategies to strengthen a culture for social and emotional learning to grow every student academically, socially, and emotionally. Academic learning is enhanced when students have opportunities to interact with others and make meaningful connections to subject material. By strengthening our school’s culture for social and emotional learning, we will support education for the whole child.
