Lawton Chiles Elementary School 2024-2025 Theme:
Level Up 2.0 - It Only Gets Better!
| |
Hello Lawton Chiles Families,
I want to start off by saying a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to give shout outs to our incredible staff before Thanksgiving breaks. Reading over the pages (Yes! Multiple pages) of gratitude made me even more grateful for the community here at Lawton Chiles Elementary. I hope that you all took time during the holiday week to relax and spend time with your students.
Moving into December, I know Ms. Willis highlighted testing attendance in her last message, but I want to reiterate this point. Students being on campus will help set them up for the most possible success when it comes to testing. Remember that this round of testing (see testing dates in the December calendar below) is going to help us see how your students have grown already this year. It will help us look at any adjustments to instruction we need to make and if any benchmarks need to be reviewed before the end of the school year. It will also help your students to get a good night’s sleep and eat a solid breakfast the morning of their assessments.
Thank you!
Matthew Astone
Assistant Principal

We would love to have nothing but 100% Parent Involvement with LCE. If you have not done so, please go to OCPS site and sign-up to become an ADDitions School Volunteer. Once you do that, you will need to watch a short safety video on your dashboard before we can place you to our school. This does not take much time, but please understand we ask this as part of our ongoing safe school security efforts. Please sign-up today!

Balloon Float at Thanksgiving
First grade students and in our EBD classroom read the text Balloons Over Broadway. This is a book that allowed them to learn about the master puppeteer who invented the first balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Students then had an opportunity to create and be a puppeteer for their very own balloon float that traveled through campus.
| |
Science Experiment
Students in our EBD classroom completed a science experiment and made their own butter. They enjoyed learning about the process, the process steps, and they really enjoyed tasting their homemade butter at the end!

4th Grade Test Prep
Our 4th grade students have been preparing to take the FAST assessment this week. They have been meeting with the teachers to track their progress on class-wide assessments. They have also been setting personal goals to lead them to success in December. We are so proud of our 4th grade team!

Teach-In
The annual district Teach-In was held on November 20th. We were fortunate to have many of our community members donate their time to come explain their careers to our students. This special event is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn more about their community as well as to begin thinking about possible options for their future.

Thanksgiving Feast
Each November, we gather as a school faculty and take time as our Hecoon family at our annual Thanksgiving Feast. It is a time of food, fun, and fellowship. It is great to spend an afternoon altogether catching up and sharing a few laughs! 🙂

Teachers of the Month
We continue to celebrate our teachers of the month at LCE. For the month of October we recognized Ms. Likus, a first grade teacher, and Ms. Skoloski, a second grade teacher. We are so lucky to have them as part of our Hecoon Family, and are excited to have you read what the peers said below.
| |
Ms. Likus is a ray of sunshine; beaming with positivity where ever she goes. She brings this positivity to her classroom where she creates a positive atmosphere for all of her students. Ms. Likus speaks calmly and sweetly to her students and they truly adore her. She is also very caring, with both her students, families and colleagues. Ms. Likus is always true to herself. She is honest, and will not fake how she feels or thinks; which is very admirable. She brings flexibility, creative ideas, and plenty of heart. She is dedicated to the success of her students and is always willing to go above and beyond for them. Ms. Likus is also not only creative in her classroom and with her students, but has a creative fun style as well. She is a wonderful addition to her team and school family.
Ms. Skoloski is a dedicated teacher, mentor, and friend. She is quick to collaborate and brainstorm ideas for any challenge that is presented to her. She is a shoulder to lean on and someone that brings a smile and a good laugh to colleagues. She inspires others with her stories from her many years of experience as a teacher. She is a joy to converse with and learn from. Ms. Skoloski is not only a great colleague; she makes her students a top priority too. She has helped even the most difficult students achieve success. She gives so much to her students and inspires them to excel. She celebrates students learning experiences and teaches students to celebrate their success. Ms. Skoloski is full of school spirit and is very loyal the people around her. She has been able to navigate the educational pendulum, system changes, and the changing times and demographics of our school while staying very organized. Ms. Skoloski remains steadfast in her beliefs, commitment, and focus as an amazing educator. She goes above and beyond with the most genuine smile.
National School Psychologist Week
We want to take a minute and recognize Ms. Gayle-Penna our school psychologist. She is such an asset to our school in terms of supporting students on campus. We celebrated her for National School Psychologist Week November 11th-15th.
