Lawton Chiles Elementary School 2024-2025 Theme:

Level Up 2.0 - It Only Gets Better!

Dear Mark,

I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks for the wonderful start to the school year! Your support and commitment have already made a significant impact, and we are excited to start our Level Up 2.0 journey! This will be our best year yet.

Many students on campus are working to set their LEVEL UP goals for learning for the year. Ask your child what their learning goals are for the year.

As we progress through the year, I would like to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance. Regular attendance is crucial for your child’s academic success and helps them stay engaged with the curriculum and classroom activities. Each day of school is a valuable opportunity for learning and growth. This includes getting to school on time. Your child begins academic learning right at 8:45. It is important that they are seated in their classroom ready to learn. The school opens at 8:15, and all students are eligible for a free breakfast. The earlier your child arrives on campus, the more time they have to settle and be ready for the day to begin.

Additionally, I want to inform you about the upcoming state testing that will take place throughout the year. The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) testing is an important part of our educational process, providing us with valuable insights into your child’s progress and areas where they may need additional support. We will ensure that your child is well-prepared and confident, and we appreciate your role in encouraging a positive attitude toward these assessments. The first assessments begin next week with our students in Kindergarten through second grade. Our third through fifth grade students will test in early September. Should you have any questions specific to testing, please feel free to contact our testing coordinator, Alison Roscoe.

Thank you once again for your continued support and for helping to make the start of this school year a great one. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Have a safe and relaxing Labor Day holiday!

TWO SHORT, BUT IMPORTANT VIDEOS FOR PARENTS.

In the past two weeks, OCPS Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maria Vazquez has released a pair of short videos to help our Lawton Chiles Elementary parents.

Please, if you have questions regarding either the parent consent forms which are required, or getting your child properly set up with their bus route, take just a few minutes to watch these videos. They are not long at all. Thank you.

MTSS for our Students

MTSS is a Multi-tiered system of support for our students at Lawton Chiles Elementary School. We work alongside families to assist the development of the whole child as we look at specific interventions that may be needed for students to continue to be successful at school. When a student is struggling, we look at what the possible reasons could be and as a team develop possible responses. As family members, you are encouraged to participate in MTSS conversations where you will receive updates on how students are progressing with their interventions. For any questions regarding the MTSS process at Lawton Chiles Elementary, please reach out to Mr. Astone at Matthew.Astone@ocps.net

Parent Volunteers Needed!!

We would love to have nothing but 100% Parent Involvement with LCE. If you have not done so, please go to OCPS site and sign-up to become an ADDitions School Volunteer. Once you do that, you will need to watch a short safety video on your dashboard before we can place you to our school. This does not take much time, but please understand we ask this as part of our ongoing safe school security efforts. Please sign-up today!

Student Safety

Fortify FL App:

FortifyFL is a free mobile app that allows anyone to anonymously report suspicious activity to school officials and law enforcement agencies. The app was developed after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act was passed in 2018, with input from students at the school. Thank you for installing this app today. Please remind your child that if they should ever see or hear of something suspicious or unusual this school year, please say something to any teacher, counselor, administration member or our SRO right away.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Illegal passing of stopped school buses:

This is a quick reminder to all Orange County drivers about running through buses' stop arms during these early weeks of back-to-school. In 2021, the penalties for failing to stop for a school bus and passing a stopped school bus on the side where children enter and exit doubled. It is imperative that all motorists properly stop for school buses so all of our students can arrive at school or home safely.

Source: Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles

This is a troubling state-wide issue at the start of the new school year, so we ask our local community to be careful when approaching a stopped school bus. In a popular story which ran this past week from nearby Hillsborough County (Tampa), over just four days, from August 12 to August 15, deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office issued 2,391 warnings for stop-arm violations. (For now, drivers who violate the stop-arm warning and flashing red lights urging them to stop will receive just a warning, but starting Sept. 12, violators will be slapped with a $225 ticket - more than red light violation fines.)

* Please also remember that using a wireless communications device in a handheld manner while driving in a designated school crossing, school zone, or active work zone area is against the law and extremely dangerous.

Orange County school district’s new absence notification policy to start again:

www.clickorlando.com (Aug. 18)

The new policy allows for parents to get a call notifying them of their child’s absence in the beginning of the day as well as the end of the day.

OCPS said each parent will know whether or not their child was in school at the beginning of the day.

High school calls will begin at 8:55 a.m., elementary school calls will begin at 10:05 a.m. and middle school calls will begin at 11:05 a.m.

The district said if your child is absent for more than half of the day, you will also receive a call in the afternoon.
