Lessons on Wellness from The Angriest Lawyer in Town
by Jay Reeves

If you want to boost your bottom line, make wellness your number one priority.
Nothing else-not billable hours, SEO, or the latest miracle software-will add greater purpose, profits, or peace of mind to your practice.
This is not something I learned in law school. In fact, I came out believing just the opposite: that by working like a dog, sacrificing family time, and consuming nerve-jangling quantities of coffee, I could prove my mettle as a lawyer and might one day "make it."

Lawyers Mutual is still going strong after more than 40 years in business.
We owe this success to our people, and the relationships they build.
Interview with Camille Stell, Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services

One of the most difficult situations a lawyer can face is a client who is threatening suicide.  I have received calls from frantic lawyers concerned about their client's wellbeing, but also concerned about their responsibilities under the Rules of Professional Conduct.  Some lawyers believe they have an affirmative duty under the rules to try to prevent the suicide, while others believe the rules prevent them from taking any preventative action.  Neither of these assumptions is correct.

The NC State Bar ethics opinion 2011 FEO 6 provides questions and factors (discussed in this article), but most resources stop short of listing minimum attributes that would meet your ethical obligations for security.  The reasoning for this is that what was reasonable 5-10 years ago may not apply now, and what is reasonable as a minimum standard now may not be so in another 5-10 years.
