Parents/Guardians:

Lead testing has recently been completed at Henderson Elementary in accordance with the Get the Lead out of School Drinking Water Act (RSMo 160.077). The law requires schools to conduct inventory, sampling, remediation and monitoring at all potable drinking water outlets used or potentially being used for drinking, food preparation and cooking or cleaning utensils.

The purpose of this communication is to share the test results for your child’s school, along with the District’s plan to address any identified issues.

An independent third-party contractor, St. John Environmental Consultants, conducted the testing at Henderson Elementary. The full report is available on the District website.

While the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard for acceptable lead levels in drinking water is less than 15 parts per billion (ppb), Missouri requires that school building water sources contain a lead content of less than 5 ppb. If a water source is identified to be producing lead levels greater than 5 ppb, annual testing will be required for that building until remediation efforts are proven successful.

Water samples that exceeded lead content of 5 ppb are identified in the notes below.

Nurse Office, Sink Faucet
  • Test Result: 8.8 ppb
  • Remediation Plan: Taken out of service - to be replaced

Kitchen, Sink Fixture
  • Test Result: 9.1 ppb
  • Remediation Plan: Taken out of service - to be replaced

Rm 19, Sink Faucet
  • Test Result: 7.1 ppb
  • Remediation Plan: Taken out of service - to be replaced

Rm 20, Sink Faucet
  • Test Result: 26 ppb
  • Remediation Plan: Taken out of service - to be replaced

Visit the District website to view the full report and learn more about the testing process, remediation plans and the health effects of lead.

Children under the age of 6 are at the greatest risk of lead poisoning. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services encourages parents who are concerned about their child’s lead exposure to request a simple blood test from their health care provider.

If you have questions or need more information about lead poisoning and prevention, contact your local health department, physician or the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services at (573) 751-6102.

Thank you,
