F.U.N.N. (Functional Understanding Not Necessary) is a concept first introduced to me through the work of Karl Rohnke. Karl is viewed as one of the most important (if not THE most important) key players in experiential/adventure education. Karl's work helped bring the world of adventure programming to schools, colleges, corporations, therapy, and more.
Karl was big on the idea that in order for anyone to take anything away from an experiential adventure program, they must be engaged in an experience that is enjoyable on some level. Meaningful learning can only take place when someone is engaged in the experience; and, you are more likely to inspire engagement when (1) people are having fun and (2) there is not an exorbitant amount of pressure to fully comprehend "the why".
The Empower Leadership Team believes in blending the concept of "F.U.N.N." with purposeful activity or play. The two concepts may seem like polar opposites of one another; however, there is great value when balancing the two polarities. The right mix of fun and purpose will lead to results that are memorable, emotionally stimulating, and empowering!
