Lead a virtual legal education clinic! | | Topics are child custody and simple divorce | | |
Looking for a manageable and meaningful pro bono opportunity? Look no further! Volunteer attorneys can now lead our virtual legal education clinics on child custody and simple divorce.
Leading a clinic involves giving a presentation and answering informational questions (no specific legal advice is given at the clinics). Volunteers receive training and all clinics are moderated.
Child custody clinics are held the second Tuesday of the month and simple divorce clinics the third Thursday of the month. All clinics run from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m.

Special thanks to Smith Anderson!
A longtime supporter of Legal Aid NC, including by providing financial support through their foundation, the Raleigh law firm Smith Anderson is going above and beyond this summer.
On June 2, the firm partnered with us and Southeast Raleigh Promise, a community development organization, to hold our second annual pro bono wills clinic for residents of Southeast Raleigh.
The firm is also participating in our Summer Associate Pro Bono Program. The program provides an opportunity for summer associates to work under the supervision of their organization's attorneys to provide critical legal help to our clients.
Thank you, Smith Anderson! Extra special thanks to James Jolley, chair of the firm's Pro Bono Committee.

Jeanne Sterba
San Clemente, California
California attorney Jeanne Sterba is one of our newest pro bono volunteers, but she's already making a meaningful difference in the lives of North Carolinians in need, including Hurricane Helene survivors.
In one case, she helped a survivor secure nearly $4,000 from their insurance company. The storm had knocked out our client's water and electricity, spoiling their food and forcing them to relocate to a hotel. At first, the insurance company told our client it would cover the cost of their stay and food. The company later declared our client ineligible since there was no mandatory evacuation order.
Out a substantial amount of money, our client turned to us for help, and we turned to Jeanne. In almost no time at all, Jeanne sent a demand letter to the insurance company, which agreed to negotiate with our client, ultimately settling for nearly $4,000.
"Our client is ecstatic with the settlement," said Hannah Price, a case coordinator on our Pro Bono Programs team. "They are very thankful for Jeanne's assistance."
And so are we! Thank you, Jeanne!

Jeffrey Wertheim
Wilkesboro
Sometimes, a little reassurance goes a long way.
That was the case with a client we recently referred to Jeffrey Wertheim, one of our newest pro bono volunteers.
Our client had filed their own claim for FEMA benefits and their own appeal for additional funds. They were waiting for FEMA to respond — and they were getting anxious.
Jeffrey reviewed our client's claim and appeal and determined that there was no way to expedite FEMA's response and that nothing needed to be done to improve the claim or appeal.
He reassured our client that they had done everything right. All they needed to do was stay in contact with FEMA and continue to provide any additional documentation and information they requested.
Jeffrey also suggested that our client apply for the NC Disaster Case Management program. He sent them a link to the program's website and a flyer explaining the program.
Thanks to Jeffrey, our client can be relieved of the anxiety that comes from uncertainty and can explore a new resource for navigating the path to recovery.
Thank you, Jeffrey!
