Leaders Connect, Communicate, and Collaborate at Annual New Superintendent Luncheon
GCSSA’s annual back-to-school tradition brought together superintendents to share lessons
from their first year, stressing the importance of strong networks and clear communication.
Over 40 education leaders came together on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Creekside Restaurant in Brecksville for the annual New Superintendent Luncheon, sponsored by Ennis Britton Co., LPA. This annual tradition, hosted by GCSSA, serves as a kickoff to the new school year, offering superintendents and district leaders the chance to connect, learn, and share perspectives.
The event featured a panel of superintendents who recently completed their first year in the role:
- Andreas Johansson, Newton Falls Schools
- Ben Ribelin, Ravenna Schools
- Anthony Stretar, Black River Schools
- Matthew Young, Cuyahoga Heights Schools
The panelists reflected on their leadership journeys, sharing their goals, district priorities, and key lessons learned. They emphasized two recurring themes: the value of a strong professional network and the power of communication in the superintendent role. From navigating community expectations to building trust with staff and families, panelists highlighted how both networking and clear communication are essential to successful leadership.
Ben Ribelin of Ravenna Schools noted, “One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the power of communicating in a variety of methods. Different audiences require different approaches, and making sure your message is clear and accessible goes a long way in building trust.”
The luncheon provided more than just great food, it offered a chance for connection. Attendees engaged in meaningful conversations, compared experiences across districts, and left with fresh perspectives on the superintendent experience.
Key takeaway: As an annual welcome to the new school year, the New Superintendent Luncheon demonstrated how GCSSA fosters an environment where leaders can build networks, strengthen communication, and collaborate to move education forward.
