Innovative Housing Opportunities recently celebrated the opening of its 54-unit affordable and permanent supportive housing apartment community for formerly homeless and low-income seniors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and art wall unveiling. IHO’s CEO Rochelle Mills and Board Vice Chair, Mary Watson-Bruce, received recognition and congratulations from Mayor Pro Tem Stephen Faessel and the City of Anaheim for El Verano’s ceremony and art wall, as well as from US Congressman J. Luis Correa’s office. The project development was conducted by IHO’s Director of Real Estate Development, Miguel Garcia, who is a recent graduate of the Nonprofit Leaders Learning Group. Supportive Services for the residents is conducted by Emilie Dang, 2020 learning group graduate. Ezra Bolds, Jr. is a current participant in the Executive Coaching Program and oversees the finances and asset management of the project.

Congratulations to Wendy Weeks, the new Corporate and Institutional Giving Director at Girl Scouts Orange County. Wendy will be responsible for corporate grants and sponsorships, helping secure in-kind gifts, and working with institutional foundations. A Girl Scout herself, who earned her Silver Award, she now gets to share how Girl Scouting not only started her leadership journey, but also built her courage, confidence, and character.

Congratulations to the Think Together team, who was recently featured on Pizarrón 52, a segment of Telemundo 52, highlighting their collaboration with Compton Unified School District and Broadcom Inc.
Morning anchor Sandra O’Neill interviewed Natalia Flores, Deputy Chief of Programs and Operations, to learn more about how Think Together continues to support students throughout the pandemic. Together with Broadcom Inc., they distributed laptop computers at no cost to students at Roosevelt Elementary School in Compton. Think Together’s afterschool programs across the state help students feel a sense of confidence, boosting their social and emotional health, and giving them an opportunity to overcome challenges.

Kudos to Child Guidance Center’s CEO Lori Pack, who joined members of the Black Chamber of Orange County, the Hispanic Chamber of Orange County, and the Asian Business Association as distinguished panelists on the Veterans & Diverse Community Employment Roundtable. Hosted by United States Secretary of Labor Martin Walsh on July 9th, panelists shared their expertise on the needs of Orange County veterans and their family members. Facilitator Bobby McDonald, President of the Black Chamber of Orange County, shared the importance of bringing together a diverse panel of experts, so that no voice is left unheard as they strive to meet the needs of local veterans.

Collaboration at its finest! The Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation and V Foundation launch ‘Dribble for Victory Over Cancer’ - a basketball program that unites universities and communities to end childhood cancer through Vitale Pediatric Fund. Individuals, families, clubs and teams will raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research while dribbling through short on-campus courses and engaging in other activities. Participants will have the opportunity to meet college basketball players, coaches and alumni. Proceeds will support research for childhood cancers through the Dick Vitale Fund for Pediatric Cancer at the V Foundation.

Great work is being done at Human Options! Since the stay-at-home orders went into effect last year, there has been a 50% rise in hotline calls and request for help. Maricela Rios-Faust, CEO of Human Options, shared in the latest CA Health Report, “it’s not necessarily that being home made the (abuser) violent. Big Brothers Big Sisters of OC and the Inland Empire, also known as BBBS, in partnership with LGBTQ Center OC, hosted a virtual volunteer info session for adults in the LGBTQ community, who are interested in being a mentor — a Big for youth, also called Littles. The volunteer information session and orientation introduced Steve Guzman, a Big for BBBS for almost three years. Steve shared how he was introduced to the program and expressed his concerns about how he would be seen as a mentor.
