Executive Director's Message - Jenny Berg

As nonprofit leaders, we know very well the value of our volunteers and the critical roles they serve to stretch our organizational resources and reach our communities by providing additional critical services and resources.
During the pandemic, as many volunteers were restricted from hands-on work at our nonprofits, it highlighted, even more, the challenges that nonprofits face without these critical volunteer resources.
As we begin to fully bring volunteers back into our facilities to serve, be sure to show your appreciation for these wonderful resources! If you need help recognizing your volunteers, here are some suggestions.
I’d like to take a moment and thank ALL of our incredible Leadership Council volunteers for their countless hours devoted to building strong nonprofit leaders and organizations.
-
Leaders Circle Facilitators - this year our 15 facilitators worked with our 140 participants in this critical program. About 40% of our facilitators have been serving in this role for 5 years!
-
Mentors to our Nonprofit Executive Directors - we have 15 mentors (Current or retired CEO/ED’s) that actively mentor CEO/ED’s new in their roles/organizations, helping the mentees become strong leaders.
-
BOLD Committee Members and Mentors - over 20 volunteers, mostly BOLD grads, help mentor our BOLD participants, ensure a strong curriculum, build the BOLD alumni community, and connect grads to our nonprofits that are looking for educated and engaged board leaders. They believe in the value of BOLD and show it through their efforts.
-
Committee Members for Programs, Membership, and Securing the Future Conference - it is critical that we include the voices of our nonprofit leaders on these committees, to ensure we listen to the needs of our nonprofits, then work to fulfill those needs through our programs, speakers, and resources.
-
Leadership Council Board Members are instrumental in bringing the needs of the sector to the forefront and ensuring that Leadership Council is here to serve our nonprofit members and advance the community.
-
Speakers - during our programs we have many subject matter experts who volunteer their expertise, and we are very grateful for their willingness to share their knowledge, connections, and time.
“Our nation is full of people whose time and talents make a positive difference in the lives of so many individuals, and the data just proves even further what a valuable asset volunteers are in building stronger and more equitable communities.” Robert T. Grimm, Jr., Director of the Do Good Institute.
If you’d like to volunteer in one of the roles above or inquire where else you could help, please reach out to me. I’d love to hear from you.

BOLD Program Manager News
|
|
|
|
Jack FitzGerald has helped design, build, and deliver this program from the very start as we transitioned it from United Way of GC in 2019, and the success of the program is largely because of him. He has recently decided to go back to his roots of his beloved hometown of Cleveland and is beginning to do great work there. I’m quite sure his firm will welcome him, laugh with him, grow with him and learn from him, just as I have enjoyed doing since he came on board as an intern program coordinator in 2018.
"I have learned how to build community, make friends, and sustain programs at the Leadership Council for Nonprofits. My life is filled with purpose and has direction because of you. I want to thank you for believing in me and giving me a chance to live my potential through some of the most meaningful work I have ever done. The BOLD program is in good hands with a strong foundation. I know succession planning is of critical importance; I will help transition and train the next leader of the BOLD program. Most of all, thank you to Jenny Berg for her mentorship, coaching, and for helping me become a stronger community leader. It is not goodbye but see you soon. Don't forget to be BOLD!”
Leadership Council has continued to grow with BOLD being a big part of that growth, and we are excited for what the future holds for BOLD and our next BOLD Program Manager. Click the links to view the BOLD Program Manager overview and the job description. We will accept resumes and accompanying cover letter until 8/1/21. Please send to info@leadershipcouncil.us.
We are so proud to share we have graduated 210 BOLD leaders, in our six BOLD classes, who are serving our community on boards, committees, our own BOLD steering committees, as BOLD ambassadors and more. Here’s an example of the difference we/BOLD leaders are making:
"Thanks so much, the Board is going well! I am definitely instituting policies and best practices taught in BOLD. I also interviewed two new BOLD graduates as likely new Board members and we have added more diversity to the Board. Beautiful change is underway for the Organizational structure.
Thank you so very much for being there when I need you! The information learned in BOLD training is helping the community greatly. Thank you for all you do."
Warmly, Elizabeth Mather, board member Project Yoga

Board Meeting Observations
The Board Orientation + Leadership Development (BOLD) program provides its participants a chance to observe nonprofit board meetings. This year, we are encouraging our Leadership Council for Nonprofit member organizations to consider this opportunity. Members have typically been willing to allow 2-3 participants to observe their meetings at a time. BOLD class dates are here.
If you are available to host a BOLD participant to observe your meeting please complete this form. All information will remain confidential, and the observer will be making notes on this observation sheet.

How to Turn Data Into Dollars: Demonstrate Your Social Impact
|
Funding is the lifeblood for all organizations in the business of social change. But when your resources are limited, so is your impact.
From galas to golf outings, many traditional in-person fundraising events were essentially nonexistent throughout 2020, and although some have slowly reemerged throughout 2021, it's likely that this form of securing financial security across the social sector will be changed forever. Magnified Giving
|
|
|
|
|
Magnified Giving was founded by Roger Grein, who voluntarily led the organization for many years, until 2015 when I was hired. As the first and current Executive Director of Magnified Giving, it is a privilege to lead the only local organization dedicated to empowering students to use their time, talent and treasure to discover the needs of the community, serve them, and award grants to nonprofit organizations working on that need. It must be taught. We need to replace board members, staff members and volunteers for generations to come. I love to watch as young people discover what they care about and then use their gifts to make positive change.
