Executive Director's Message

Lately, I'm often at a loss for words (which for me is saying a lot!) to describe the current environment for nonprofit leaders. But I'm making the rounds of our Leaders Circle groups this week as they wrap up their program year, and it's giving me one word: encouragement. Leadership Council members who participate in these groups encourage each other though listening, tough questions, and laughter. They've weathered personnel challenges, board relations, succession planning, health issues, and yes, funding loss together. I'm encouraged by their commitment and care for each other, and for the time and thoughtful leadership of the 18 volunteer facilitators who lead them. Thank you!

I learned a new word yesterday from my smart and funny colleague Danielle Clore, who leads Kentucky Nonprofit Network: "crisis-tunities," said in regard to the increasing need to better communicate the value of our sector to policymakers and elected officials. As we respond to calls to advocate around legislation that affects our sector, it's a chance to reiterate our impact as organizations and as a sector. A couple of great resources for that are the Human Service Chamber's Economic & Fiscal Impact Study released last summer, KNN's More Than Charity, and ArtsWave's Economic Impact of the Arts.

Most of the other words I'm hearing from colleagues these days are unprintable, so I'll leave those to your imagination!

Be well,

Beth Benson

Executive Director
