Letter from the Co-Presidents

Dear Leadership Council SMC Community,

As we reflect at this time of year, we pause to recognize the amazing people we get to work with. We are grateful for the generous support of our Board of Trustees, Advisory Council, and committees who give their time and expertise to help us build leadership capacity in San Mateo County. We thank the County of San Mateo, our City Partners, our Corporate Sponsors, and every donor supporting our work. We are inspired by the members of our CORPS and Emerging Leaders Classes of 2024 who are fully invested and bring their energy to every monthly Learning Day. We thank our expert speakers who willingly share their experience and knowledge with our participants. Lastly, we are grateful to the members of our Alumni Advisory Council who are planning opportunities for ongoing participation, engagement, and impact for all of our graduates.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, we will bring several exciting events to our community:

  • District 4 Candidate Forum;
  • Leadership Lab: Talents to Strengths, a two-part CliftonStrengths-based experience; and
  • Elected Leaders programming: An innovative program that combines personal professional development and issue-based learning for elected leaders from across San Mateo County.

Additionally, we just launched our three-year strategic planning effort and we would value your input. Please complete this Strategic Planning Survey by Friday, January 12, 2024 to help us design a future that best serves San Mateo County.

We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

Leading together,

Kaarin Hardy and Margi Power

Community Connections

Emerging Leader (EL) Rachel Curtis-Robles - a.k.a. Dr. Rachel, the bug scientist - recently visited three classes of her fellow EL classmate and teacher Thao Le at Sunnybrae Elementary. Dr. Rachel had students on their toes with a story about the life cycle of mosquitoes, magnifying glasses and bugs for students to examine. She provided a leave-behind package with books, toys, and even a water tank with mosquito eggs that would hatch into larvae, pupae, and eventually mosquitoes... an endless source of fascination for the students. What a great EL connection that impacted students in SMC!

Last week we attended the South San Francisco Reorganization Ceremony during which current CORPS member James Coleman, and CORPS alumnus and Board Member, Eddie Flores, were sworn in as Mayor and Vice Mayor, respectively.

It was a pleasure to see so many current and past Leadership Council SMC program attendees, alumni, and speakers.
