This edition of the Good NewsLink provides many articles highlighting significant economic development and business expansion activities. From the new commercial, retail, and other business expansion throughout Southwestern Illinois to community planning for future development; this edition demonstrates the substantial efforts are underway.

This article features the July 18th Leadership Council collaborative Manufacturing and Craft Day event at the SIUE East St. Louis Center with our strategic partners, Mid America Workforce Investment Board, St Clair County, Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program, Southern Illinois Builders Association, Scott Air Force Base 375th Communications Group, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Center,  Southwestern Illinois Building Trades Council, Ameren Illinois, Sun Coke Energy, Progressive Recovery Inc., Korte Luitjohan Contractors,  Southwestern Illinois College, and Phillips 66.
 
Over 300 students age 2-18 participated in this event. The activities included reading construction books to children; hands on demonstrations in carpentry, electrical, and welding; inspiring presentations by company speakers; motivational Comments by Col. Terrance Adams and Chairman Mark Kern; and interactive equipment displays. Without the quick work of our strategic partners, this important effort would not have been possible. A big THANK YOU to all our partners who participated in this important community event! We have many more speaking engagements scheduled and in planning for the Manufacture/Craft your Future Campaign. This effort helps to inform and inspire students and young adults to consider options in Manufacturing, Crafts, and STEM careers.

The challenge is educating youth and their parents about the high pay that comes with the 1,500 manufacturing jobs in Southwestern Illinois in the next five years, and connecting them to the right resources to ensure their success, according to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Center Executive Director Jesse Dixon.
