OI's COVID-19 Guidance for District Conventions

Optimist International By-Laws require Districts to hold an Annual Convention between August 1 and September 30 each year, unless they petition for a Special Convention. With varying local regulations and confusion over safe practices for social gatherings, Optimist International provides the following guidance for 2020 District Conventions.

  • Virtual Conventions meet the By-Law requirements, and electronic voting is allowed. Districts will determine voting methodology.
  • In-person Conventions must abide by all local government and health department regulations.
  • Regardless of local regulations, Optimist International requires masks be worn at all times, except while actively eating or drinking.
  • Regardless of local regulations, Optimist International requires six-foot physical distancing for people not from the same household. Meeting rooms should be set up with this in mind, and it is recommended hospitality sessions be held outdoors when possible.
  • Districts that wish to postpone District Conventions until after October 1 must petition the Optimist Board of Directors and provide the required notification to the District membership 20 days in advance of the new date when a special convention is approved.
  • Safety of our members is the highest priority. Common sense should always prevail amid changing local conditions.

Honor Clubs are stronger Clubs

Believe it or not, the end of the Optimist year is almost here. This is a good time for all Clubs to set their sights on the end-of-year goal of becoming an Honor Club. Becoming an Honor Club helps your Club to remain strong, which will allow you to offer more services to children in your community. This distinction shows that you, as Club Officers, left your Club in a better place than when you took it over.

Support the Foundation to be an Honor Club

Would your Club like to be an Honor Club? The only way this can happen is if your Club nominates a Club Foundation Representative and donates to the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation.
Last year alone, the CCOF remitted $71,000 in scholarships to young Canadians, in addition to offering grants for community or health-related Club projects and providing receipts for tax purposes to donors of the Outsourcing projects.

Help the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation in going the extra mile for children and youth. Make a club donation.
