Letter from our Board President
Greetings LSS alumni!
Four years ago when I was accepted into the Class of 2013, I did not fully realize the extent of LSS
and how much I'd enjoy volunteering to support my community. Through the years I've gained great
friends and colleagues - it has been an honor to serve on the Board and find opportunities for
networking, socializing and learning.
My focus as president will be to create a diverse and inclusive environment where we develop
leaders and create opportunities for alumni engagement. At the Board retreat in June, we identified
three key initiatives:
1) creating robust alumni programs
2) engaging in community outreach to
diverse populations, young professionals and millennials
3) class curriculum and continuing
We would like to hear your ideas and don't be surprised if you get a phone call
inviting you to an event.
Let's find ways to bump into one another!

Julia Bernath (Class of 2003)
Julia Bernath has been serving on the Fulton County Board of Education, representing Sandy Springs and portions of Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Roswell, since 2000. A graduate of Leadership Sandy Springs, Leadership Atlanta and Regional Leadership Institute, she has led many boards and committees in both civic and private arenas, including serving as Chair of the Sandy Springs Education Force and has mentored school board members on local, state and national levels. Julia is the recipient of numerous awards.
Here she shares her insights on community, leadership and LSS.
1. How did you become involved with Leadership Sandy Springs?
I was invited to join the Class of 2003 and
I knew I would learn a lot about our area (not then a city) and decided to submit my application!
2. What was your biggest takeaway from your class experience?
Connections! Making connections with others in Sandy Springs who cared about our area and the people who live, work and play here! Also services - I learned not only about the services offered in Sandy Springs but the lack of them (back in 2003) and the tremendous need to be fulfilled.
3. What advice would you give new class members?
Make LSS your priority for the year! Don't let other events and activities take you from fully engaging in the friendships and experiences you will have if you truly make this a focus for the next year!
4. What advice would you give LSS alumni?
Stay Engaged!! Find a way to focus on something you are passionate about with Leadership Sandy Springs, whether it is helping plan a program day, plan an alumni event or support an LSS event! LSS is a wonderful organization to connect our community, and as alumni, you should be a part of it's fabric!
5. How did Leadership Sandy Springs increase your skill set; what has been the greatest value of your overall involvement with LSS?
I learned about how our area was developing and could talk intelligently about becoming a city and the needs we now face for community support. I know that if I am to make a difference, I need to step up and be a part of the solution.
