Just over two weeks ago, the Amherst Chamber of Commerce hosted our Annual Meeting, where we seated our 2026 Board of Directors, who will once again be led by Peter Petrella, President of TalentRise, and unveiled our 2026 Public Policy Agenda. Our agenda continues to serve as a vital advocacy roadmap shaped by input from our diverse Economic Development & Public Policy Council and everyday member feedback. This year's priorities focus on promoting a more business-friendly environment across New York State, rolling back some of the regulations that coincide with development, updating the tools necessary for our industrial agencies to incentivize projects, and we continued to opposing unrealistic timelines and mandates from the Climate Action Council, while affirming the Chamber's commitment to environmental protection and recognizing past successes in emissions reductions through technological advancements. The agenda also addresses a variety of human service issues and outlines the benefits of supporting our higher education institutions. While our agenda is unveiled at the beginning of the year, we recognize that issues come up all the time, which is why we constantly update our website. I encourage everyone to visit our website to learn more about the issues important to our members.

We were fortunate to have newly elected town Supervisor Shawn Lavin join us to provide his State of the Town Address. The Supervisor, already one month into his term, has hit the ground running on several priorities and shared some of those details with our audience, including an emphasis on making it easier for a business to open in town. It was an opportunity for Supervisor Lavin to introduce himself to many of the non-Amherst business owners who make up our membership, and many of our attendees enjoyed hearing his personal story. I had the pleasure of serving on the Supervisor's transition team, and he was very direct and sincere about his desire to see an improvement in the speed at which government works. He hopes to provide residents and businesses in the town with a clearer picture of the expected timeframes for various tasks.

This month, the Chamber officially kicked off its Emerging Business Leaders (EBL) Leadership Program with its inaugural session, welcoming a select group of young professionals from diverse industries across Western New York. Our EBL program is designed to cultivate the next generation of regional leaders. The program features monthly classes covering essential topics such as navigating workplace conflict, team management, time management, and advanced leadership skills that participants can apply throughout their careers. Highlights include mentoring from the Amherst Chamber Board and Councils, multiple networking and mixer events (both in-person and online), community engagement projects, and a standout new addition for 2026: an optional complimentary six-month membership (April–October) with the Amherst Chamber of Commerce Toastmasters for honing public speaking and communication abilities. The curriculum also incorporates a half-day Leadership Symposium sponsored by BankonBuffalo and conducted by Daemen University's Graduate Studies. As an added benefit...[Read More]

New York Secure Choice Savings Program

Genesis PPG wanted to share a quick update regarding the New York Secure Choice Savings Program, a state-run retirement savings program for employees.

What is the Secure Choice Program?

The New York Secure Choice Savings Program is a state-run retirement savings solution designed to help private-sector employees save for retirement through payroll deductions into a Roth IRA. Employers that meet certain criteria must register and facilitate the program for eligible employees.

Who Does This Apply To?

You are required to register if your business:

  • Has 10+ employees,
  • Has been operating 2+ years, and
  • Does not currently offer a retirement plan (such as a 401(k), SIMPLE IRA, or SEP).

How Can Employers Comply with New York Secure Choice?

Employers must either implement New York Secure Choice by the appointed deadline or offer their employees a qualified retirement plan through the private market.

  • 30+ employees -> March 18, 2026
  • 15-29 employees -> May 15, 2026
  • 10-14 employees -> July 15, 2026

If you already offer a qualified retirement plan, you can certify an exemption instead of registering.

If you have any questions, call the SBDC office at (716) 878-4030 or send an email to their program coordinator Ms. Karina Loera at loerabk@buffalostate.edu.

New Year's Resolutions in February?

January often comes with high hopes and ambitious goals, but life happens—work ramping back up, left over cookies, and winter weather can derail even the best intentions. If your resolutions have slipped, February is the perfect time to hit the reset button. Here’s why and how:

Why February is Ideal for a Fresh Start

  • Less Pressure to do what’s “trending”: The “New Year, New You” hype has faded, giving you space to set realistic goals focused on something meaningful to YOU. Don’t worry about what is being posted on social media. Focus on a goal or habit that would make this year feel like the best one yet, for you.
  • More Space at the Gym: While it can be tough to find a parking space, a treadmill or lane in the pool at your local gym or fitness studio in January, February is usually a different story. Starting a new fitness routine in a packed gym can also be intimidating. By starting in February, you may have a little more elbow room and easier access to a trainer and equipment.
  • More Daylight; More Energy: Longer daylight hours and warmer weather can boost energy and motivation. When the sun is out, go outdoors and soak in some vitamin D!

Be sure to Restart the right way:

  1. Reflect, Don’t Regret: If you tried, but didn’t succeed in January, use what you learned to adjust your goals.  Having a “practice” month can help ensure that this time around you will stick to it.
  2. Start Small: Instead of overhauling your entire routine, pick one or two habits to focus on—like adding 1,000 extra steps, going to bed 15 minutes early or drinking and extra glass of water.
  3. Set SMART Goals: Make them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound for better success. Broad goals like “getting healthy” make it difficult to know when you’ve reached the finish line. Setting goals that can be measured will allow you to watch your progress over time.
  4. Remember your WHY: Your goal should have a purpose that is meaningful to you. That way, when you are tempted to skip a sweat session or indulge more than you should, you will be more likely to stay committed because your goal is tied to something with a purpose.

Remember, wellness is a journey with ups and downs along the way. Just like your laptop, you can Ctrl+ Alt +Delete, as many times as you need to. The important thing is that you keep moving in the right direction.
