Leading Through AI Anxiety

It's a Leadership Challenge, Not a Tech Challenge

When Generative AI exploded onto campus, the administrative responses were predictable: "We need a policy." But this isn't a simple policy issue. For faculty, it's potentially an existential one, wrapped in a layer of anxiety, resistance, and fear. They are asking: "Will this make my expertise obsolete?" or "How can I possibly stop students from cheating?"

As academic leaders, the "Expertise Trap" instinct is to jump in and solve. We're tempted to initiate the drafting of the "perfect" syllabus policy, mandate a new training, or simply tell faculty what to do.

But this top-down approach ignores the root of the problem: anxiety. When faculty are anxious, a mandate only creates more resistance. Not feeling heard, they feel disregarded and managed. This moment calls for a different kind of leadership.

Developing a Leadership Toolkit

Your job isn't to be the AI expert. Your job is to be the expert in leading a productive, human-centered conversation. A coaching mindset shifts the role from an anxiety-creating "AI Enforcer" to an empowering "Capacity Builder."

A coaching-based leadership model provides the practical toolkit to master these essential skills. It empowers leaders to approach this new challenge with a proactive and strategic mindset, replacing reactive measures with thoughtful engagement.

This approach helps administrators:

  • Manage Fear and Resistance: Coaching fosters a more open, trusting environment where faculty can voice their anxieties and skepticism without fear of judgment.
  • Navigate High-Stakes Conversations: It provides a framework for navigating these difficult, emotional conversations about academic integrity and job security, shifting from a directive ("You must do this") to an inquiring approach ("How might we...").
  • Build Buy-In, Not Just Compliance: Instead of forcing a policy, a coach builds consensus by empowering faculty to co-create solutions, which builds genuine buy-in by giving them ownership of the outcome.
  • Cultivate a Stronger Leadership Pipeline: Equipping leaders with a coaching skillset to manage this crisis is a strategic investment that prepares them for the next inevitable disruption.

A Coach's Perspective

Coaching is not just an abstract idea; it is a set of skills a leader can use in real-time. A leader with a coaching mindset recognizes that faculty resistance to AI is usually a symptom of anxiety. They take the time to prepare for these conversations.

Here are a few questions a coaching-minded leader might ask themselves:

  • "What is my faculty actually anxious about? (e.g., Cheating? Obsolescence? Workload?)"
  • "How can I create a space where they can voice their fears before we move to solutions?"
  • "What question can I ask that will help my team move from 'This is a threat' to 'This could be an opportunity'?"
