Rapheal Ocran is a junior at Lehman College, where he is majoring in computer information systems. In 2019, he moved to the U.S. from Ghana and enrolled at Bronx Community College to pursue his associate degree. Immediately, he faced challenges in connecting with his peers. “At BCC, I initially struggled to break out of my shell as one of the quietest students.” he says. |
But then he joined the Black Male Initiative, which provides Black and Latino men with mentoring and career advising services, and he became a part of the ASAP Men’s Roundtable, which hosts events focused on mentoring, mental health and a strong sense of community. Through these programs, Rapheal was able to find, as he says, “a new family” who helped him gain confidence. At Lehman, Rapheal now works as a mentor for the Urban Male Leadership Program.
Why do you love the work you’re doing now?
“I have the opportunity to give back and support other students in their journey. My experiences at CUNY have not only shaped my academic path but have also helped me develop as a leader and mentor within my college community.”
What advice do you have for CUNY students?
“Students can increase their knowledge and develop a network of peers and mentors who can offer support and direction by participating in appropriate programs or clubs. Participation in these groups has the potential to lead to leadership positions. These experiences improve your CV, but they also help you gain key skills, build confidence and form important contacts that can further your career.”
